Well I was lucky enough to spend a little time in the pit with Jesse (leapingbare) yesterday. I learn so much every time I get to watch him and usually end up with some waste flakes to go home with...WELL yesterday he worked a couple huge rocks and made two HUGE bifaces that he threw in my bucket to finish up! OMG! THANKS AGAIN JESSE ;D Along with the bifaces I got a few good spalls and sat down this morning to work on one of the better KY blue ones. I thought Id take some pics along the way. I ended up with a pretty nice blade Ill probably haft up later today.. ;) WEll here it goes. Starting with the spall using freehand percussion with a copper bopper.

That was a little pic heavy Will but i enjoyed every one of em :). You certainly tamed that spall down - looks great! That Jesse now i tell ya, they just don't make em like him very often..

Thanks Paul! I appreciate it. :) Yeah I know it was kinda alot but I wanted to show the whole process. Ive seen a few of these before and really learned from them so I thought "what the heck, why not" ;)

Will, You are so lucky to get to knap with Jesse, truly an artist with stone. I usually get to knap just once a year with Jesse an Shannon at the classic. I have one of those huge dacitite preforms that jesse made for me an the wrote a personal note on it I laugh every time I see it. I t says "Bob thin the ends first an the middle last" I like your pics o f the spalls to a finished blade they look real good. Later Bob

I was pleased to see that you got such a nice blade from that killer spall. Well done!
Dont forget to wax it.
-
wax it?

Wow, Will! that's a nice one. Man, Jesse, you're gonna be missed a bunch when you head over to Hawarrie.

Interesting flaker you have there, or is that a punch of some sort?
-
Thanks you guys! Your right Eddie, we are gonna miss him.
Lee- Jesse showed me a trick to get rid of those troublesome fingernail flakes that you inevitably get with some materials like KY Blue. You just take wax and melt it over the finished stone and wipe off the excess. The wax gets under the flakes and makes them invisible. Cool trick that works well.
Tom- that's a horseshoe nail finish flake/notcher.

That is a beauty Blade. Will make a great looking knife.
-
Lee: Waxing em camoflouges all the fingernail catchers (help me out with the word guys, ha). Not steps but all the tiny terminations, haha.. The word escapes me - sorry ;D.
-
Thanks Cowboy, makes good sense...I still a fair number of those at the moment :o >:D
-
very well done

The blade looks awesome... but the series of pictures is priceless! Love seeing the progression as you worked the stone. Nice job on both blade and pics.

Thanks again y'all, thanks stevenT I know those reduction photos sure have helped me in the past. Especially before I was able to watch other knappers in person.
