Well shucks. Even with a well rounded back, heavily tempered belly and what I call a decent tiller....she still formed some compression fractures . Oh well! The only thing I can come up with is I should have made it 2" longer to compensate for the long riser I wanted. I just cant believe 1" per limb longer would have saved this one. Ash can be tricky for me.
Stats:
66" oal - flatbow
11 " riser area
1 11/16" wide fades
7/16" tips that start to narrow about 11" from the end.
-
Now, that's something to be thankful for! ;)
-
i like it ;D, happy thanks giving
-
Great job on the tiller. post more picks AFTER you spend the day with your family.good job PD
-
Looks fine to me assuming that it's the style you wanted.
E.G Longish stiff handle, stiff outer third, I tend to go for a longer working limb myself, but it's a matter of style.
Handsome bow.

Just need some heavy arrows to shoot from that BRUT!!!
Happy Turkey Day!!!!
Opps :)
-
I'll comment when you post a picture of the front veiw - it's impossible to comment on the tiller until then.... ;) apart from the limbs are bending evenly. Good luck hunting.
-
That bow ain't no different that a busted drum.....you can't beat it!
-
whats the front profile look like? Looks smooth to me.
-
Now that's a tight ASH ;).......
You know it looks good to me ;).......hehehe...I've seen front and side and its a beauty
-
Very nice work. Jawge

Hi PD, Its not like me to give out any advice But at first glance Id say more bend towards the fades. It seems when I post for tiller advice and comments I always come away thinking I need more bend at the fades. I had to string and pull a few of my bows to compare profiles Most my bows look close to yours. Your fades my be longer then anything I have. My present bow is bending right out of the fades so I think or that was my goal at least.. Looks like your bow would draw smooth. Have a good Thanksgiving, Your Friend, Chuck
-
Chuck that is an 11 1/2" riser. It gives the impression of stiff fades. If you take a close look at the taper area you will see the bend starts right as the taper flattens out. My bottom limb is a touch stiffer than I want. But experience tells me the lower limb will probably take about 1/4-3/8" more set. I wont be upset if it stays where it is either, it shoots lights out right now. I will get some finish work done in the coming days and post the details and pics. Thanks for the comments all.
Toasty? Who said its toasty Ryan???????
-
Glad it is a toll free # ;D looks pretty sweet ;)

I see,
As soon as I posted my comment I tipped my laptop screen way forward and all that I could see was your bow in perfect profile. I new the riser was longer then norm it just caught me off guard like I said "At first glance" I like it a lot good job.
You know what they say " A feller should eat till there just a little bit sick" Cheers PD, Chuck

Hey PD, how long is the bow overall? I've never made a bow with that long a riser, but I've always heard that was a good way to make a fast/stable shooter. I'm curious just how much working limb you have there.

I would have done the same friend. Its my first long riser bow and I love the feel during the draw and release, very stable. Very different than the standard 6-8" riser area I am used to. Try one buddy! You might like it.
-
I like it pearl! Looks to me like it's got stiff levers on the ends? Is it based off a molle?
-
I will post pics on Saturday with all the bell's and whistles added on. Spec's as well.
66" George
Crap camera Kris. The tips are actually about 7/16 squares the last 2-3".
-
I was only indisposed for a few moments
It looks good to me. I noticed the lower limb ut I've had the lower limbs slightly change their tiller some. I don't know that it's that important to get it perfect (more so that you have). I try but it seems like you can over work it, or I can. SO it kinda try to creep up on my target weight with allot of exercising the limbs and then stop when i get there unless I have a hinge.
-
Thats a good idea to exercise your limbs a bunch while you tiller. Be sure the weight drop you notice isnt from over stressing those limbs early. If your inducing set it will drop draw weight and performance in a flash. Slow an steady wins the race!

I guess I cant tease Keenan for his "Black Friday break" anymore.........sorry Keenan ;)
-
:( :( Bummer Bro. Happens occasionally to all of us that make bows. Grab another stave and get back on the horse ;)
-
66" long. 12 inch riser I think you said? I don't know your draw is, PD, but that gives you 27 in max and that assumes your bow is bending out of the fades. Ash is very weak in compression and needs longer than the minimum IMHO. I never had much luck with it. I think I made 7 and 5 developed chrysals. I haven't used it in years. I have a friend who loves it. He draws 25 in and makes a bow 68 in long backed with rawhide. Jawge
-
It was too short George. I thought I took enough measures to prevent chrysals at 66". I draw 28".
-
Too bad Perlie. She was looking so good. :(
-
Awe man :-\....I was liking that one
-
Sorry for your loss, Drums. I broke my last two whitewood bows, just recently. I'll get two nice atlatls out of one of the broken bows!!! :-[ ;D ;)
-
Bummer, that was looking good.
George
-
Ouch!!
That's to bad ... that shooter was lookin good
-
It still shoots, it didnt take on any set or lose weight......................yet.............but we all know that the 7-8 squiggles will weaken that area shortly. I may shoot it until I feel its getting towards dangerous.
One more lesson I learned examining it last night. When I heat treated the belly it became concaved on that surface. I used an 80 grit sanding block and my scraper to smooth it all back out before I even started to bend the limbs. Guess what? That little area that is chrysaled is concave again. Somehow it came back after shooting several hundred arrows, or I missed flattening one little spot???? Just my findings that may help somebody down the road with a similar recipe.

That sucks PD. I havent used ash in a long time. Only built two bows from it and one of em broke and the other one took a lot of set. Wasnt very imressed with it as bow wood.
