This may not last too long but I'm getting back into abo flintknapping in a big way. No more copper for me... for now. Hopefully the withdrawal simptoms won't be fatal. :o
I made a new batch of vids. Here's one:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L8cp5IRjw_4
You can find the rest on my channel. In the near future, I will make videos with nothing "modern" in them. The hardest part will be to find a spot that doesn't have the sounds of engines, sirens, or aircraft in the background.... :-\ The next hardest thing will be getting used to wearing buckskins and body paint...heheh :o

Nice tool set! I've been wanting to go back to Abo , but everytime I try it I fail catastrophically! Its got me a little gun shy about it. Keep the vids comming .

Uh-oh, I know of such a spot. Deer hunting might get interesting??!! Now that primitive camp site makes more sense. ;)

George, I think I'll buy some bright orange dye for those buckskins...
-
Yea, wearing buckskin during rifle season might be a little risky. Some blaze orange face paint might look cool though... Let me know when you're heading out there. I'll stand guard for you. George

Nice vid. I have tried hammerstones and such. Somtimes I might use one to try and spall a big piece of tough rhyolite when I dont want to mess up my copper by hitting it to hard and deforming it. The problem for me is that I cant find anything other than quartzite around here and it tends to break up after a few good whacks.
-
Patrick,
What color is your loin cloth????? :o
Cipriano
-
Cip, the "Master of the Universe" look is quite fashionable, I hear. The cloths come with steroids and axe body spray... >:D
-
Bandit, you've got to have more than just quartzite near you... you're in TX, right? If someone else doesn't volunteer, I'll hook you up with some rock.
Tower, I see a lot of abo in my future.

he may have more than quartzite, but i don't think i do, i could be wrong though, anything in the new england area?

Finder, the New England area is famous for it's lack of knappable rock. I grew up in NH. The only thing I can suggest is try looking for high grade slate. It can be slabbed easily (ask a roofer) and you can grind it into arrowheads that are about as sharp as bone. For free knapping stone, you'll have to take a road trip to NY or PA.
-
i got exicted for a second, then i realized what is near my house is shale not slate, but i will defiantly start looking out for slate, i do have a large supply of ceramic flooring tiles, somebody left a large box at my dump, i know its not the best, but it sometimes works :-\
thanks

Haven't tried tile yet but it's on my to-do list. What part of NE are you from?

You mean your "to-hit-list".
Fish, I haven't had much luck w/ tiles, but my kids broke a porceline bowl the other day and it knapped like nobodies business. Just white porceline, like a plate bottom. I really liked it. Not too primitive, but worked great when material was in short supply.

I just got back from New Hampshire and Maine a couple of weeks ago and the scenery is breathtaking, but the knappable rock, although there is no shortage of rock, is as far as I can tell non-existant. I went to the New Hampshire Museum in Concord and most of the stone tools were very crudely knapped specimens due to the poor material. I suspect the better lookig specimens were made of imported rock. Really enjoyed the museum. It is a good stop for anybody visiting the area. My wife's family are all New Englanders, so I go up at least once a year. I'm already looking forward to my next trip.

I want to thank you for your super informative videos on indirect precussion. They have advanced my flintknapping enormously. Pieces of stone in my junk bucket that I used to throw away are now being turned into nice points thanks to your techniques. Enjoyed your new Abo vids also, although I need to improve my less than Abo work before advancing to the more difficult real Abo approach. Thanks again for your vids.

I'm in Wilmington, NC. North Carolina is just as famous for lack of rock. I think "NC" actually stands for "No Chert." My poor postal carriers lug imported boxes of stone to my door, cursing my name as they herniate.

Thanks, Xin! Glad the videos have helped you!

HAHAHAHHAHAHHA, aint that the truth! There is some decent rhyolite in Uhwarie if you ever get the chance to make it out there.
-
That video is really cool 8) :D thank you and good luck on your no copper.
-
plenty of knappables in new england, just need a baseball bat and a good back ;D
