Title: Is this too knobbly?
Post by: SimonUK on July 10, 2007, 06:17:08 pm
Can I make a bow out of this? Or should I stop wasting my time now? There are several knobbles on this stave, this is the worst of them. There are also some cracks on the back, I'm not sure how deep they go... how can I get glue into them?

Thanks guys.

Hello Simon,
None of that 'character' looks terminal to me, try really cheap and runny super glue in the shakes or heated Araldite(to thin it) if they are big.  Yew's to good to waste, I'd go for it.  Good luck.

Thanks Yeoman. Wouldn't superglue or araldite be too brittle once set?

Good charector wood you have there. If the checks dont run to deep you should have a really good stave. Make sure to leave extra wood arround the knots. Knots have no worth when it comes to wood!

Thanks guys, runny superglue sounds a good idea then. Maybe I could poke it into the shakes with some fuse wire then clamp it closed.

Simon, That looks like a fun yew stave to me. If nothing else, you will learn bundles from it. Just take your time, don't get frustrated and put it down when you do.  Will you post a pic of the complete stave?   Pat

ps. Super glue is a godsend! In the checks(or shakes) in the belly go in sessions. If you try to fill each all at once the glue doesn't cure well. I'll add some glue and let it set before adding more. Do this as you reduce the belly. If the voids are severe, I use fine sawdust as a filler along with the super glue. Having a fine needle handy helps get rid of air bubbles in the glue down in the cracks. They are bad!

Thanks Pat, here's the whole stave. There are few knots too which I hope I can cope with.
