Working on my 2nd bow. Its hickory and the tiller looks great, The tip overlays look good. Now comes the part that makes me want to hide it in the closet. I put prarie rattler skins on it and one dried considerably darker than the other. I am thinking of wiping the lighter one down with dark walnut stain.
Has anyone did something to make skins match better?
Thanks, Ron

Well, I dont know if Id stain it myself,Id probably enjoy the contrast,Hey! If you really dont love it Im shure Icould! Need my adress? Auggie.
-
Symmetry is overrated! Don't stain it!
-
leave it !
you may dislike the color even after you stain it.
LEAVE WELL ENOUGH ALONE !

Well no need to change its color now. I put duct tape on it to remove the scales and when I pulled the skin ripped. So now I have 1 limb with a skin and 1 without. Now I need a bow to shoot selfbow class this weekend. So now I have to decide if I want to shoot a recurve this weekend or rip the other skin off this bow and seal it. Today sucks lol

Slap some cherry bark on it instead and you can have it ready within 48 hours.

thats if I had some cherry bark lol I don't have a clue where to get it or what it would look like. I ordered another skin and it should be here thursday. Still I am interested in cherry bark.
Thanks, Ron

Go stealth mode, fly under the radar 8) Shoot it with one skin on and a wraggedy one hanging. Then just out shoot everybody else. ;D
-
If it shoots well then shoot it regardless of looks.
I guess you could do bow socks to hide the limbs. Try argyle socks and pretend its a fifties bow ;D ;D
-
I'd say just shoot it! When you're shooting you can't see the back anyway ;)...and who cares what everyone else sees. If you shoot the bow well, go win the competition. Call it.."Road Kill"! Pat
-
Thanks for the words of encouragement guys. There isn't much chance of me winning the shoot so I at least wanted to lose in Style ;D
-
See me for some bark and I'll place you on a list for some future harvest "orders".
-
Rule # 1,...never get to much in love with your first few bows ;D
-
8UP it will shoot just fine with one skin and I promise not to make fun.I have stained some copper head skins and it worked pretty well. Most won't ever notice the difference any.I ones got a pair of skins and 1 turned out to be timber and the other was a Diamond back,I still have it and I think I am the only one that even noticed. :)See ya Friday.

330bull, have any pics of what the cherry bark looks like on a bow?
NorthshoreLB, I know no otherway.
Pappy, You won't Laugh huh yea right
Greg, Thank you for the generous offer but I ordered 1 skin from Pine Hollow
-
I had a skin rip once when I used tape to remove scales. Now I go over the skin with coarse steel wool in the direction of the scales (from head to tail) and the scales come flying off. And no risk of damaging the skin.

Since Am A professional Taxidermist that is no problem for me, I simply airbrush them with lacquer paints and spray it with clear lacquer.
If you know a taxidermist he might want to do it for you ?
If you were in Fla , I would do it free.
