Title: Copperhead osage-"Short Mountain Special"
Post by: Postman on September 25, 2011, 09:49:58 pm
Finally manged to pull off a short (58"NTN) hunting weight (52# @27) hard-shooting bow with only a half-inch of set,  so I tried my hand at copperhead skins. Boy are they tough to do! They get like tissue paper once you wet them down.

Named it after the mountain we live on here in the Shenandoah valley. The wood is from a farm on the base of it, and the skins are from here also.

Tried a handle wrap that involved cutting out an area to make the braided leather almost flush with the wood. I love the way it shoots and hope to bring a fat doe down with it Saturday morning.  I think it has better cast than the 55# 62 incher i hunted with last year.  It's been difficult weather-wise but it finally brightened up a bit today so I could take the pics - thanks for looking, and good luck this season.

I never realized how good them copperheads look on yellow wood.  Very nice.  I'll have to start keeping my eye out for some of them.  Your braided handle job is also appealing.  The inset is neat.  Good luck on Saturday!  It sure looks like a meat getter.

Sweet! I bet that handle feels right, too. Looks like a springy stick launcher.

First off, love the bow and skins. Like everything about it.

But, by insetting the leather into the handle....does that run the risk of raising a splinter and a SNAP over time? I like the idea and am curious...

Thanks
Ron

Hey okie, it should be fine, as long as the handle area does not bend at all. Plus i only remove about 1/4 inch of wood. I have a buddy in OK near broken arrow. Been down there, hope to go back and hunt. Pretty country! The handle is in buildalongs:
