A buddy asked me if I wanted to go cat fishing with him last night in a big farm pond. I haven't fished in a farm pond for years, so I was excited to go. We got started at 8:00. It was an hour later and my buddy caught a small catfish. A little while later I started getting a bite. I was holding the pole and I felt a gentle pull. I set the hook and started reeling it in. I knew it was a decent fish, but it wasn't really fighting too hard. But as soon as I got it near the bank, it woke up and took off. I had to fight it for a while to get it back to the bank. We pulled it out and just stood there looking at it. It is by far the biggest fish I have ever caught. We didn't have any scales to weigh it, but we did measure it. It was 47 1/2" long and 21" around the middle. We cleaned it and split the meat.
For a little perspective, I am 5'6" and 230 lbs

Nice fish OO. Did you keep the spines for arrow heads?
-
Yes Sir,
That's a fine Catfish!

I didn't even think about getting the spines. I wish I would have.
-
Nice cat! From the length and girth, it should weigh somewhere around 25-30 pounds.
-
We were guessing it was around 30 lbs. The Indiana state record is 37 lbs.
The guy that owns the pond told us to come back and fish any time we want. He said he stocked it with a bunch of catfish in 1996 and nobody ever fishes for them. He also said we were fishing on the bad side of the pond. The other end of it is where the good fishing is. ::)

I'm taking the meat into work tomorrow night. We are going to have a fish fry at lunchtime. :D I called my crew and they are all bringing in something to go with it. Should be a good meal.

I would give my left nut to catch a fish like that, I think about 10# is the biggest cat I have ever landed. Congrats.
