Title: New tool and first hafted arrow head.
Post by: bowtarist on September 17, 2011, 12:00:59 pm
I made me one of those notching tools the other day, and when I got it home and together I realized that I could use other tips in it rather than just the nail, I made up some copper tips and cut this antler and now have a nice antler flaker, my first, and an interchangeable tip flaker made from brass.  The materials cost me less than $8, but if you notice, I changed the front part out for a piece I already had @ the house.  I made this point in about 15 minutes, I know it shows, and decides to haft it up since it wasn't pretty and I had yet to do that.  All natural materials, except the imitation sinew and the superglue seal.  Arrow is mulit-floral and tip is Burlington, glued on w/ pitch. I have fletched it w/ 2 chicken feathers and plan on shooting it after I post this email. I'm going to a knapping deal @ the state park tomorrow,so I hope my skills improve after that.  ;D Thanks for looking and have a great day, dpgratz

well done. nice  transition from point to shaft. a little more wrap behind the head will help keep the shaft from splitting. i like at least an inch of wrap behind the point. another point can be made fairly quickly. shafts on the other hand are a lot of work and need to be protected so they can be reused. nice work.
