Actually, I meant "YEW" won't believe what I found >:D

And there is plenty more where that came from, especially if I do some splicing or take downs.

And here are some nice Hackberry, White Ash, Pignut Hickory and a lonely Mulberry. There is probably 20 acres of these pipe straight trees, probably 40% Hackberry, 40% Ash, a sprinkling of Hickory, Beech and Maple.
I "culled" these few with a small hand brush saw that I keep in my truck and it was all I could basically fit into my truck since we had my wife, 2 boys and 2 dogs and my hawk in her hawk box. I'll definately be heading back fo much more of the Hackberry and also to load up on some Mulberry.
I also never knew that Hackberry had that dark colored heart wood.
Thanks for looking~

I knew I shoulda gotten a falcon :(

I knew I shoulda gotten a falcon :(
arrggg, if I had a buck for every time I've heard that lately while out hunting with my hawks & falcons I think I could retire early. ::)
-
Nice!!!
-
Haha...ya finally found a lil bit of yew. Nice. ;) I know yewve been looking hard for some of your own.
Ya also got a lot of splitting, peeling, and sealing to do with those white woods. Do it now, asap. :P if I was closer id come help ya,but your a big boy and can handle it :P
-
That's a nice haul Lee, but I don't think that's Hackberry you are referring to. I have downed a bunch of it and it is white all the way through.
-
Holy cow, Lee! That should keep you stocked for a bit. Congratulations on the find.
John

Thanks guy...
@Blackhawk, I know I have a bunch of spltting and debarking. I just finished debarking 3 larger ServiceBerry, 2 Apple, 3 Slippery Elm and 1 Dogwood last week. I have actually gotten all the Yew debarked and sealed yesterday and also one of the Pignuts.
@JonW, ok...I'll thanks for the heads up. Another mystery wood, ugg. The leaves sure as heck looked and felt (the were abrasive and "toothy" to the touch) like Hackberry and the bark looked like a perfect match. Now I am wondering what it might be?
-
yew ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D
-
buddy that is a nice haul 8)
-
Outstanding! The best part is when you're all done and all of those little lovelies are sealed, drying out and resting peaceably...nice haul...
-
Nice! 8)

Some nice dark heartwood on that Yew.
If you ship it to England it will season much better O:)

I don't see any Hackberry in that pile :-\ You sure???
-
Yeah, I've got to agree- must have forgotten to load the hackberry, Lee.
Nevertheless, fine stash you got there and will look forward to all those wonderful bows in future.
-
leee dont debrark the yew till ur ready to make ur bow i never do just scrape it when ur ready to make the bow save that sap man brock >:D :o
Dang Brock...they were the 1st to get debarked as I valued them the most and wanted to make sure they got sealed and in the AC basement to start the drying process. I did scrape em right down to the sapwood and left it all on though so hopefully they will still be ok?
I thought you were out chasing Elk this week?
-
yep lee ull b ok i seal
lmy yew staves with anchor seal if u scrapped it ur fine but man i never touch the yew bark till im ready to make the bow i just seal the end s i been socutin a bit waitin for string man and j r to get here they ll be in sat a m early i may head up friday meet em up there raing good again tonite were in good shap not walkin on egg shells anyway the bulls are relley bugling early this year im rearing to go brock
-
Nice find, Lee! If memory serves me correctly, Elm has sticky leaves?
-
Dang, must not be Hackberry then since that seems to be the consensus. So any ideas what it might be then?
Here are some shots of some leaves, bark & the end grain up close...

I was also wondering if anyone can help me tell the difference between Pacific Yew, Irish Yew and English Yew? Here is a pic that may possibly help ID these buggers.

Many thanks all!
-
Looks like Leeosus Slikkerscapus....
As far as the yew goes pacific has a more tan n brownish in the heartwood. And the english is more orangish creamy to reddish in it.
Ps...looks like elm to me. Elm ,hackberry, who cares...both good stuff. Make some bows out of it.
-
looks like elm to me.. maybe slippery elm
-
Hey Buckeye, come on up >:D
Thanks for the new latin name on the Yew, I like it!
Hey Fruit-the-loop, guess I'll settle with Elm then, oh well. Still searching for that elusive Hackberry I guess.
-
Lee,
Hackberry looks like nothing else in the woods. The bark will have what looks like a bad case of warts :). When you figure it out it will stick out like no other tree around.
-
I hope i am right coco puffs 8)
-
nice haul lee. That looks like elm to me. I'll trade you a stave of elm for a stave of hackberry. ;D
-
I knew I shoulda gotten a falcon :(
arrggg, if I had a buck for every time I've heard that lately while out hunting with my hawks & falcons I think I could retire early. ::)
Yes, Lee, I am sure yew Cuda retired. >:D
(Psst...got our 25 yr old redtailed hawk's weight down from 5# to 3#, 13 oz and she is keen enough to fly to glove for the first time in 7 years!)
-
Sounds good Jon, I'll have to make a note to get a good ID book to help me out I guess.
Coockoo for Coco Puffs...indeed!
Hey DVS, I take it that means that the Elm I have may be preferred to Hackberry then? That stuff sure is a pain in the butt to debark, got all but 1 of the "Elms" sealed and in the basement.
JW...that is a pretty good laugh! Cuda will appreciate it too ;D congrats on getting the old Red working for a living....she should be happier earning her food vs just getting it tossed to her. Happy for ya!
-
lee it s elm sure of it i got tons of it here haha u get ya a couple 12 in logs of it to split i gureente ya will say makes a hell of a bow but it s a pain to split the interlockin grain is why pound paass out pound some more may take ya a while but ull be in mighty fine shape for elk sean next year if ya start splittn elm heck ill even trade ya some hackberry for that elm lolol i love it hate splittin it brock ;D O:)
-
Brock, you got everything all ready to rip when your buds come in on Saturday morning? Please take some pics of the camp and elk if you, I'd LOVE to see it.
Hmmm, in shape for Elk Camp huh? How about instead of trading Elm for Hackberry I cut up two 12"-14" Elms, split em, debark em and seal em and deliver them to you when I show to Elk hunt with ya >:D >:D >:D LOL
Be safe up there and the best of luck to you guys!
-
lee you come on out well put in for tags about jan so plan on next year kerry and kent will be here and maybe dvs and hon8 possibly loyd so if u wanna go plan on it bro haha i got plenty that elm haha so u keep it lol wish i could find a couple high school boys to come split some for me lol cuz i aint doin it lol will keep the pic s posted another 24 hr s scott will be here hopin jr makes it he may not his father in law has been real sick and in i c u so not sure if he s coming ill keep ya posted brock

-
Just to add to Brock's statement about debarking the yew. I also stripped some bark off of some yew and I got the same warning from Gordon. He said the sapwood will check without the bark. We slapped some shellac on the exposed sapwood to slow down the drying.

Brock, that is a killer offer and I may just have to take you up on it! Drop me a note when if gets near the Application period and I'll give you a call to sort out all the details.
Sorry to hear Jr can't make it but he is doing the right thing and being with those that need him most.
You and Scott have a "killer" >:D time up there, we're living vicariously through you guys!
Best of Luck!

The sapwood will check even if you seal the whole stave? I wonder if that is mostly because of the dry environment out there vs humid MI? Guess I get to find out on there 3 Yew staves ::)
-
Last pic right is elm.
Congrats for all ;)
-
Lee...just seal the sapwood, ends, and several inches along the belly and sides from the ends. I debarked, sealed(shellac),and roughed down a couple staves of my yew overhaul and there fine so far. They've moved some due to the rapid moisture loss. So I learned yew needs to season slow, and the slower the better. So now im leaving the bark on the rest of it and wait the long wait for it. Its the right thing to do. Try to put your staves in a cool high Rh environment for the first several to 6 months before moving them in a warmer drier environment.
-
Thanks Fuz!
Chris, I haven't split them as they are not the largest of diameter Yews and they are sealed both ends & all sapwood. I have them in the basement which currently is fairly cool with AC upstairs so that should be good and in about 2 months we'll kick the heat on so that should help jump start the drying process too. You remember where I had the BL stacked in my back basement?...well you can't even see any of the BL now sense the pile surrounding them is getting HUGE >:D I have the 2 larger Elms to debark and then I think the only thing I will harvest and put up to dry yet this year is some more Osage and definitely some more Yew.
-
Id keep a real close eye on them Lee. Me personally I wood reduce a lil off the belly to make sure it don't check on the back. I think its a possibility that yew might check in the manner you currently have your staves. Reducing some belly wood will reduce this possibility to zero.
-
Ahh, ok...I see what you are saying, makes more sense than the way I currently have them and they'd likely dry faster your way. I'll drag them back outside and look at them closely for the best bow layout and then reduce them like you mentioned. Thanks for keeping an eye on this newb! LOL
