.................................. I talked to Jamie and we both thought it might be fun to continue these threads to impart some knowledge and increase the genetic memory bank. There are NO prizes or gratituties just knowledge fer some of you. It will include all kinds of things from animal kingdom to prehistoric to modern. Tools ,tracks whatever. I will start it off and hopefully Jamie will see it and post the next thing or two. When its guessed we will give a short reason for it and its background. All are welcome but on easy ones you old timers let new foks make a guess. Both are modern and hachets. What are they (HAVE TO HAVE NAME)? "Uh its a hachet!" LOL. What does it do and how is it used ? So here we go ! ;D.....bob

Shoot me ifn' I'm wrong, but....... No wait, don't! ;D The first one looks like a bearded throwing axe that was used by the Franks, but I think the handle is to short. The second one, I have no idea.
Sean

I'll stay out of this one,I have both of them. ;)
-
I'll stay out of this one,I have both of them. ;)
Oh, don't rub it in. I have priced both of them, but don't own either. :'( Justin

I have one of the second variety, inherited it from my Grandpa. I just made a new ash handle for it a while back.

First one for cuttin shingles? The second one is a right handed carpenters hatchet( for takin crown out of lumber like floor joist and such) .....Brian
-
Whats names brian ? Guess 1 st one could be used fer that but not usually. Second one can be made ta work lefthanded and its not a carpenters hachet ;D.....bob
-
yea, I have one of the 2nd as well. comes in very handy for decrowning, debarking, some finer work as well when I'm not worn out from swinging it.
and I'd like to have one like the 1st but all I've ever seen were expensive. suggestions on where to get one that's less expensive ??.............not that I really need one :D
-
Persimmon......Made 1 st one from a home depot hachet. Hachet in original shape was $12. Common foks what is it called and what can it be used fer by bowyers ? ;D........bob
-
ok Bob. seems I saw one elsewhere that someone had modified,, with a drill and some file work I could make one too. (duh, everyone says about me!! ;) )
-
Yea I was going to tell you how too,Persimmon,Bob beat me to it. It was posted on Paleo Planet.I got mine at the flea market.
-
Hmm.......... Didnt know was on Paleo Planet. Made this one 4-5 years ago. So what is it called ladies an gentlemen ? ???..........bob
-
The second one is a broad hatchet for hand hewing logs(one sided bit) and the first one is a home made carving hatchet. ??? Pat
-
Ok Pat is correct on second hachet. Its a broad hachet that was used in preindustrial revolution fer the most part ta hand hue logs fer barn or house buildings.Ifn ya look at hachet ya see it only has edge on one side so it turns the chip away from wood surface. Flat side goes against wood when choppin'. This is a right handed axe since Iam right handed. Left handed can be made by takin' head off an reversing it. Popular with hachet bow makers and works very nice when razor sharp. Heavy long term use will give ya forearms like Popeye ! :o Sorry 2nd one is not a carvin' hachet but is homemade an can be used fer that. Has name what is it? ??? ;D ;D....bob
-
simply referred to as a bearded hatchet,, at least that's all I've ever heard 'em called.
I want one for bowmaking- seems to me you could grab it low on the handle for hogging off material or choke up, grabbing right by the head for fine work like when you get close to your lay-out lines.
-
Yup Persimmon is correct its called a bearded hachet. "Bearding" is the removal of steel er iron material so ya can choke up on hachet and make small concise cuts er chops.Chokin' up in design wont cause possibility of cuts by hachet. In 1st post 1/2 primitive said it looks like a bearded throwin' axe. It does and thats where name comes from. Was called a "Franciscan" axe used by franks. Theirs had a curved blade and handle was much longer and blade bigger. Axe was devestatin' cause when thrown at enemy it would bonce and skip an 'cause great damage ta foot troops and horses. :o Is very useful in bow makin' fer ya that dont use a bandsaw and dont like noise and want ta sit outside by stream er in backyard er woods and listen ta birds etc. ;) RAZOR sharp its a great tool and as said can be made with some time an tools. Cheap hachets from home depot etc. doint have carbon content of say Granbury axes and need ta be sharpened more often. A fair trade off fer cost ta my way of thinkin............bob
-
Ok heres a weird one just fer fun! Made it when I was 8 years old. Ah, we wont go into how long ago that was ! ;D What is it and what does it shoot? ;D........bob

The first is a rubber band gun, (maybe?) second, either a coat hook or a key holder, hook, thing.
Sean
-
Oh, it shoots by putting the rubber band on the tip, fitting it into the clothes pin, and opening it with your thumb.
Sean
-
i think i know.
-
Hahaha-yup its a rubber band gun and does as ya said 1/2 primitive. Do kids still make 'em? Got in trouble as a kid fer shootin' paper clips at family members as did Jamie ? Second is not a coat er key thimg. ;D.........bob
-
2 sylables starts with a g? ;D
-
YUP, hahaha! Is 2 sylabels an starts with a letter g and ends with a lette l. ;D........bob
-
Ok heres another simple one. Last hachet ,I know y'all are tired of 'em. I carry it in possibles bag er back quiver when I hunt hawgs and deer. Is homemade from a piece of 1/4" cold rolled steel. Has an ipe handle. What do I use it fer? Hint, Chet Stevenson(ole time archer hunter made many). He used 'em fer gettin' steel broadheads outta trees when he missed. I dont use steel broadheads but I use it ! ;D.........bob

it's a redneck animal hanger-upper thingy, aka a g_ _ _ _ el
-
Its a gambrel for small game and the hatchet is for splitting the hogs pelvic bone or chopping bone in general
-
Hey welome back Dana! Yup like Persimmon said its a "redneck hanger- upper thingy" and u said a gambrel. But its fer hawgs an deer not small game. Yup, hachet is fer just that. Its light weight, only 10 oz., easy at carry and sharp as all "getout". Use it fer other things but its main purpose is ta split bone as ya said.
-
Thaks bob, I couldn't tell how big the gambrel was ya need to include something
in da pic fer perspective. This is fun keep em comin ;D
-
Yep, they still make 'em, I remeber seeing a friends gun that he made, worked the same way only it shot beans. :) He built it to look like a rifle.
Sean
-
Ok , One more easy one. I dont use it but I did years ago. What is it and what is it fer. Maybe Jamie will click on with some. ;D.........bob

David are yer ok ? I said in post they are hachets not axes ! ??? ;D..........bob
Yep! Always was always will be...I like bows and sharp pointy things that go with em! ;D
-
Gut hook for drawing birds? Haven't seen a rubber band gun in a long time. We used to make them just like that and make rubber bands out of those old red inner tubes. It would sure burn a blister on your sister ;D Ever make popguns from elderberry stems?
-
"It would sure burn a blister on yer sister!" ;D ;D ;D ;D Wow! Haven't seen a popgun from elderberry stems in a coons age! :D :D............bob
-
"Red inner tubes"? Hillbilly, you are not old enough to remember red inner tubes.
The only reason I remember them is my daddy saved some after black synthetics came out.
Best slingshot, Flip in these parts, bands ever.
David
-
Ridgerunner, yep, unfortunately I am-hitting the dreaded 4-0 here in a couple months. It helped that my dad owned a tire shop when I was a kid :)
-
Chet Stevenson--Broadhead Hatchet. Used to remove arrowheads from stumps and trees as well as other small projects around camp. Well, one out of three ain't bad.
J. D.
-
Did ya read post on hachet J.D.? ??? I said Stevenson made 'em fer removin'steel broadheads from trees. That isnt what I use it fer an that was the question.Dana M already answered it correctly.....bob
-
Now I have to look at the pictures and read? :P
J. D.
-
Can yer read ? ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;Dhahahaha......................bob

arrow straightener. I have one similar to that I made. Pat
-
Yup, Pat is correct. Its an wood arrow straightner. Stick with a brass cup hook holder screwed in. Used by rubbin' on high spot of bend where it raises heat and compresses fibers of wood thereby straightening wood shaft. Used ta use it when I shot wood arras some years ago. ;D............bob
