Title: what tree is this?

While walking to my favorite fishing hole i stumbled across this tree. I immediately noticed the weird fruits so i assumed osage orange. However i'm not even sure if osage grows here in new jersey. Wow I never would have thought black walnut. Is this stuff any good for bows?

Its good bow wood. It generally is stove pipe straight and knot free.

Yep BW, the fruit will stain your hands real good.

The fruit also makes an all natural, and free cover scent for deer season.

I saw somewhere before, might have been on this site. Somone went through and showed how they made a good wood stain from the fruit from the balck walnut. On my one hunting property we have a tree that drops a ton of fruit each year so I thought about making it myself but just haven't gotten around to doing it.

The nuts are good, but a lot of work to get.  Get a bunch and fatten up the squirrels around the house for dinner in a few months  >:D  Outer cover makes a nice wood stain.  Also, if you soak the whole fruit (about 10 or 20) in water, then dump the water in a dirt area, all the worms come to the surface for easy fish bait.

Not only is it good for all the above mentioned I have recently made some tough and awsome shooting arrows of the heart wood...my favorite arrow wood as of now...

Take the nuts, put then in a gunny sack, beat the sack with a baseball bat.
Throw the sack in a small pond and the fish will float to the surface. >:D
The oil does the job and the fish are edible!
Learned this about 50 years ago and doubt I've done it in the last 40.
Don't even remember if it killed or stunned the fish.
Probably illegal these days.
