When you chase a ring, is it best to get down to early wood and then scrape it off? Seems like it would take forever. I've been getting down to early and then taking it off in really thin shavings with my drawknife. And when it's said not to violate the back ring, how much can you get away with? If you had a 3/8" ring, for instance, and you accidentally gouged 1/16" would it ruin it or can you get away with taking a little off in places? I guess it probably depends some on the draw weight and the stave itself.

You are ok unless you cut all the way through and into the next ring. I think going to the early wood and scraping to the ring you want is fine. Sometimes I go to the ring above and scrape to the next. I do the bulk of my ring chasing with round shave hooks. Check this out. jawge
