I was in the process and decided to pull out the video recorder. Seen a lot of videos on this but no close up views on how each layer can look or how to know when you have reached a single ring. Obviously, I figured it out after trial and error and thought this might clear it up for some others. The link to the video is below:

Thanks for posting, this will really helpme on my upcoming first bow. I do have one question though. On the belly( not sure if this is the right term) of the limbs, the parts facng you if the bow were drawn...does that part need to be one growth ring too? Or is it only important on the face?

Thanks for the video. I've been building board bows and haven't done this or seen this done before. If a picture is worth a thousand words, then is a video is worth 32,000 per second? It could be argued...
