Title: crystal eye in Burlington
Post by: iowabow on July 21, 2011, 08:36:34 pm
Different notches this time. I am branching out a little.  I was going to make a bow jig today but just can't get this knapping thing out of my blood.

I was as surprised as you all.  I broke the tip off of two just before I picked this one up.  I was just waiting for it to break in the middle everytime I pushed off a flake.  Shannon is amazing he can push a flake with pressure from one side to the other.  I am working hard to learn that but it is going to take time.  I will post the broken pieces and unfinshed points I made today before I made this one.

Look at the days wreakage.   Points on the left broke because of poor support and I stopped on the left ones because I had been there before.  Maybe I will practice notches on them later.  I was glad to finish the day on a high note. Hey thanks tower.  Check out these notches.   I was real happy with the size but as I focused on the technique I lost sight of there directions.   I forgot to keep redrawing the lines.  Anyway this is what I got out of the eyeball piece.  It had a crack that went deep and finally broke when it was 1/4 thick.

Still pretty.  A shame it was cracked there, but the point is still great.  Your notches are soooo much better than I can do.  I did a point this morning that went from a knife blade to a long arrowhead to a short arrowhead and from corner notched to stemmed.  Not much else I could have messed up and still gotten a point. :'(  Anyway, sorry for the digression, I really like that burlington. :)

Nothing wrong there. Looks good to me. When notching it the notching platform doesn't look right don't try it till it does. If you try to force it it will pop!
