Title: Anybody ever try Tigerwood as a backed bow?
Post by: Easternarcher on June 22, 2007, 08:44:44 am
While thinking about what wood to try next, I realized that I recently came across 2 pieces of 2X3 X48in. tiger wood...Sooooo,I'm wondering what would happen if I backed it with Boo or Hickory ::) Would it make a hunting weight bow and or  hold together???

Would it even NEED backing? Depends on grain I suppose, but these pieces are hard to read. Tigerwood is laying at the edge of the pile with the glue drips on them.

I think Tiger Woods has body guards that would prevent you from getting near him with a sharp object.

Tiger wood as
goncalo alves <Astronium spp.> http://www.hobbithouseinc.com/personal/woodpics/goncalo%20alves.htm
or
Zebrano <Microberlinia Brazzavillensis > http://www.hobbithouseinc.com/personal/woodpics/zebrawood.htm

I assume that if the picture is about the wood, it is not Zebrano.

Some numbers:

The numbers say it is good tropic wood, but not as good as ipe, bulletwood and greenhart.

Marc stLuis made some Goncalo alves bows while ago (at least if I remember correctly), so he prehaps jumps in and I recal some other folks thinking its excellent wood, but it must have been 3 years ago.

Tigerwood will work. Virtually any fruit or nut tree, and most tropical hardwoods, will provide serviceable bow wood... some better than others. Back it. I like hickory, quartersawn, 1/8".

Cool, Thanks Guys...I'm thinking for sure that it may be Goncalo Alves and NOT ZEBRANA.

I'm gonna try it....it's too purty to waste on risers alone.
