Every time I drive by a bulldozed a brush pile and see those bright orange roots from a distance I feel a tinge of regret, mostly because I know a potential bow is about to go up in flames.

Hey that's cool!  Wonder if a bow could be made from a tree root???

I've thought about a root bow for years. And have scearched up lots of pushed up trees. But so far never found a peice big enough to try. Did dry small billets. It's really properest (thats not spelled right) and solf even after seasoning but I thank you could sinew it MAYBE. Billets were small I traded them and the guy gave them away. I never heard of the out come.
I CAN'T REMEMBER WHO IT WAS but I was told on so me fourm maybe here. That so This was 14 or 15 years ago.
I was told by  someone saw at a shoot or somewhere they saw a osage root bow. But I could never could find out who it was. This was last year or so ago. Those are a perrty root though and more yellow, orange than the tree.

Tim Baker always said that tree roots are significantly different than the trunk and limbs and that they're unsuitable for making bows......just sayin'
of course I'm just hard-headed enough that I'd likely try one anyhow.

I think that the math would dictate the bow to be square

Yes indeed, those roots would be squared.  LOL, Iowabow.

Never made a bow out of a root but they make a great walking stick. Have made several, one with a nice twist at handle level. Might try a bow next time.
