i live in western Washington and i was wondering what kind of woods are available to me for arrows? thanks
-
sitka spruce for split shafts (where you make 'em out of a large piece, then split or saw them down.)
for shoot shafts, oceanspray, nootka rose, red osier dogwood, bamboo, salmonberry.
or go to the hardware store for poplar, bamboo....

you can make arrows out of salmon berry? :-\

went out today and got 10 salmon berry shafts about 3-3 and a half feet long and about 3/8-1/2 inch around

with bushes like salmonberry and elderberry, you have to pay attention to the size of the pith- that's the spongy core. the smaller the pith the better. If you're in elma, ocean spray should be an option- very hard stuff and heavy. it has a creamy white bloom to look for. salmon berry will not produce as heavy a spine as ocean spray for your new 50 lb VM bow...

so salmon berry is a no-no?

Japanese arrow bamboo, I see it in everyones landscaping around the Longview area. Ask first or be really sneaky
