My trade bow is in the finishing stage.  This weekend the rawhide will go on followed by snakeskin when that is dry.  Not too long now. :)

My trade bow is an Eastern Woodland style(Cherokee) locust bow. She's tillered with tempered belly and single side nocks. Today I added a bit of color and the first hand rubbing of bear grease. Should be ready to ship in a week or two.

Thanks. I'll post more pics after she is mailed off, hopefully this week.
She shoots very well too! I put a bunch of arrows through her today. Amazing how little hand shock these bows have and how well they shoot.  The only finish on this bow is hand rubbed bear grease.

Thanks guys. I have had 2 successful locust bows lately. Both are Eastern Woodland style bows. Maybe I should stick with them.
John, Lucy Brown don't mess with none of my stuff unless I give it to her. Not like any other dog I've owned.

I was home with a sick young'un today, so I was able to get mine stained, put my handle wrap on, and put a couple of coats on it.  Gonna put as many arrows through her as possible this weekend to make sure it's not gonna 'splode and ship it out next week (hopefully).

Its been good fun watching the progress and the final bows made for the trade.  I almost joined this year but I knew I had so many irons in the fire that I didn't want to stress about the deadline and I live in Thailand so the shipping is a little bit of a problem ;).  But I'll try for next year.

justin, ive heard of guys knapping under water(seriously)
maybe you could be the first to tiller a bow under water  >:D ;D

i plan on working on mine one day soon  ;),but not to soon
after all its spring time in minnesaota after a real long hard winter, the days are gorgeous, evrythings getting green again
and the bike hasnt been ridin much at all since last fall(only twice so far this year)
a guy has to have priorities after all
besides we have untill the 4th of July to get them mailed off
so  "        " you will just have to wait untill i feel good and ready,or way behind schedule, for me to finish it up  >:D

Can't get enough speed up under water to break the gray/green beast.

It'll take me til then to finish. Throw in a birthday party and an anniversary between then and now. Hickory shoot this weekend. I got a looooot of scraping to do between now and then.

I'll keep you guys in touch!¸

Haven't received mine yet but also haven't sent mine out yet. Mine should be ready to go out next week sometime. I'll post some pictures on here just before shipping. It's turning out nice so far, actually used a maple board with some of the straightest grain I've found in a maple board. Backed with rawhide and did a paddle bow design, 2.5" tapering down to .5" at the tips. Bow is a little heavy right now though, the person it's for requested 45# or higher, but right now it's pulling around 65# so I'd like to get that down to at least 55#. I know alot of people say rawhide doesn't add draw weight to a bow but this thing was pulling 55#'s before I put the rawhide on. I did have a little issue with the tips so I cut those down about 1" on each side, which should have added about 5#'s and I think the other 5#'s were a result of the rawhide.

Sounds like a nice bow, I would suggest that if you can get it down closer to the person you are building fors draw weight it would be a good idea. I know we said get as close to the specified draw as possible but if its 10 pounds heavier than what the person you are building for  has asked for they may not be able to enjoy as much as they would if it was closer to  what they asked for, for all we know they have had an injury and the most they can shoot without hurting themself is 45 pounds. Chances are thats not the case, OR maybe you are just trying to throw us off with the bows weight ;D  Just a thought ;)

I asked about insurance and the PO told me that I would have to show a reciept to prove the value.  I told them I didn't have a receipt since I made it.  They told me I couldn't insure it then.  Somebody should be getting a white PVC tube from Indiana any day now.  Hope you like it.

my brother works for USPS
he once told me as far as they are concerned,if its hand made its worthless  :-\
he also said becuase of that that i shouldnt even waste my money insuring items i ship
becuase if i were to file a claim, odds are they would never pay out just for the fact it is hand made
so i never insure anything i ship
Title: Re: Whats the count?

I never insure any things(bows, arrows, etc) I ship. I do ship USPS, Priority with delivery comfirmation. With priority mail fewer hands touch your package in shipping and with delivery confirmation it can be tracked.

I found a suspicious package at the door the other day.  Local bomb squad signed off on it, actually their dog lifted his leg on it.  I got it open, but it seemed to be jammed full of styrofoam and duct tape.  I immediately signed on to PA Forum and searched for a duct tape backed stryro bow thread but didn't get any hits.  Back to the drawing board.  I pulled out my pocket knife and started carefully cutting away at the duct tape.  Half an hour and two knife sharpenings later I retired to the shop for a tomahawk and a makeshift machete ground out of an old leaf spring from a two ton 1936 Dodge grain truck.

By the time I had hacked thru all the duct tape, the room was covered with shreds of styrofoam so that it looked like I'd left the windows open thru a South Dakota Blizzard!!!  And that's pretty darn appropriate because it was CHRISTMAS!!!!  The only thing missing was the famous leg lamp standing in the window!

SA (a.k.a. Shawn Acker) has turned out a fine osage piece with snakeskins from Criveraville.  He claims it is 45# draw, but it feels a bit more than that and it sure seems to handle the ash arrows matched to my 50# everyday shooter.  There are a number of choices that diverged from what I would have done with the stave, but SA is more than willing to discuss why he made the choices he did to turn out this bow.  In the end, not only will I have a fine bow to shoot, but I'm also going to learn from another bowyer, AND I've made a new friend.  I call that a nice trifecta.  Pictures coming!

I'm really pleased with what I received, I hope everyone else is as pleased with what they receive.

Finished tillering and sanding yesterday I just need to get my beeswax and oil on it and decide if I want to put a leather cover on the handle or leave that for the recipient to decide. Probably shoot a few hundred shots through this weekend to test it out :)

Started and abandoned a pyramid oak bow, too light.  Started an osage flatbow, but it has enough grain reversals that it will need to be tillered with sandpaper and scrapers - not enough time.  Started on my next osage stave, but the back of the bow is slightly cupped and it will take forever to chase a growthring with a shallow gouge chisel.  Found a roughed out osage ELB standing in the corner that I had forgotten and I've now got the bad kink steamed and bending to line up the string thru the handle.  Oy vay, why do I always wait until the last minute!?!?!?!

Have you pmed that person and ask if they recieved there bow? I had a post man drop a package at the house down the road and it was vacant, the package sat there for over a week before they figured out what they did when I reported it.

heated and straightened last nite, final tiller. then some shooting and final finish over the weekend. got a nice bit of salmon skin ready for the handle. hope i can pull that off. never used salmon skin before...it may not ship till right before the holiday weekend and with the 4th falling on monday the person getting this osage stick will most likely receive after the holiday... but i really wanna shoot it in good. wish me luck!

Sadiejane, be sure to share some pics of the Salmon skin...I really want to try some fish skin of some sort on an Osage bow for a friend of mine in CA that takes me ocean fishing every couple years and he is a bowfishing nut!

lee-will let ya know. right now it is well dried into rawhide. i found a recipe for tanning fish skin using egg yolks and oil that is supposed to be relatively simple and quick. gonna give it a try tomorrow and see what happens...have lots of good leather if it doesnt work out. but have really been wanting to try it. and will try again even if it doesnt work out for this bow. saw on paleoplanet an amazing handle treatment using salmon skin.

Very cool, so is it the average "garden variety" Salmon that a guy can buy from any good meat/poultry & fish shop?  Hadn't thought about that as an option for limb skins but maybe that would work ok?

thaks for the plug jw halverson :) i'm glad you like it. i learned alot from this build and also learnd alot about packing bows....never use styrofoam and duct tape  ;D
these trades are fun just being able to trade with other bowyers and meet like minded people (lots of people consider this a unusual hobby   ::)  iv'e only been at it for about a year and a half so still pretty green, but will be doin this for a while.

Well I was going along nicely with the tillering last night, shortened the string to get the final brace height and, what do you know, when I pulled it to 25'' a splinter popped up on the back... I'm pretty short on time and I hope the wrap will hold up. I really don't want to ask the teacher for an extension! A bit stressful but with a bit of luck, it'll all fall into place. This bow is a bit special, the first cable backed bow I try so I'm learning.

Hope all your bows are coming along nicely,
keep up the good work!
Matt

Got my project to a smooth tiller today.  It's about 15 lbs heavy (guessing), and I intend to carefully stalk tiller on this one so I don't come in too light.

I had to go with drawing a straight line down the sides of the limbs to tiller because of a couple odd placed reflexes and deflexes.  I got it on short string now and it looks like crap if I pay attention to the shape of the wood.  But when I draw the lines on the sides, you can see the fair curves of the limbs plainly.

I'm tired of sweating over this one and can't wait until it's finished!   >:D

Haven't received a trade bow yet and wanted to give whoever drew my name a head's up that I am gonna be leaving town with the family for a lil' vacation (and hog hunt) tomorrow. Won't be back until the 5th of July, so if you happen to be the person who drew my name and is soon to become my new bestest friend please understand that if you have sent or are sending the bow at this point that I won't be getting it until I get back to town. The address I provided is my business address and the package will be in safe keeping until I can pick it up, so no worries there.

Wish me luck all, hopefully when I get back I'll be able to change my moniker from "Almostpighunter" to "Pighunter"

Well if you know it has been recieved I would check with the recipient to see that they got it. Sometimes they will try to deliver it and leave a notice then if the recipient dont get it within so many days they send it back to sender. Not saying this is the case but if anyone has not heard from there recipient and there bow has been shipped for a while, better check it out.

Josh

Yeah I'm with everyone else looking out the window at every big truck I hear pass by. I still haven't gotten mine out yet, so maybe I should stop looking outside and get mine send worthy. Shooting great and looking good and it's actually at the requested weight, which I was a bit shocked about. I typically come in a bit heavy on the weight or end up dropping way below, but I think I might actually be learning :)

I'm off to the post office in 5 minutes to ship mine. Very rewarding to give something away which you invested a lot of effort into.

I haven't received mine yet but, as you may know, Canada Post has been on strike for the last 2 weeks and just started delivering again. We canadian bow traders will have to be patient :)

So don't be alarmed if you sent a bow in Canada and haven't heard anything back.

Cheers!
Matt

Would you guys that have recieved bows please post pics of you and your bow. We all want to enjoy your gift.   I think someone was considering writing an article for PA magazine. If they do they will need high resolution pics of you and your bow for that. So please be prepared if the opportunity arises.  8)
