Post by: ken75 on April 20, 2011, 03:06:11 pm

1 3/4 wide at fades to 1/2 inch tip , 50 inches tip to tip 45lbs at 27 inches tilller was a booger on this one.  copperhead skins and antler rest.

Those copperhead skins are striking! The only other snake I've seen more of around here than copperheads have been garter snakes. Neither of which I have seen large enough for backing bows.

Ken75 nice bow I love to see your work. Is the humidity very bad in your part of Georgia? The reason I ask is because I have noticed you make a lot of bows from hickory and was curious how that affects them?

Dlh humidity is an issue here winter is not so bad but spring an summer iits usually maxed out. i get good performance from hickory i would like to think design plays a roll in that

awesome save Ken, the standard double your draw length plus 10% rule don't seem to bother you any :) The whole thing is really nice, skins, profile and especially the full draw.

Great looking bow.  Question on the v splice.  Is that all that is holding it or is there an overlap somehow under the skin?  I would have thought you would have needed some sinew there.  Thanks.

Randy

Randy the v splice is overlayed with an 1/8th thickness of maple but not for the integrity of the splice . the tips are cherry which i know doesnt like tension and with this short design i knew there would be high stress on the recurved section of the tips. i didnt trust the cherry grain to hold up so the maple was to help it . in an unbending section of the bow especially the limb tips a v splice is extremely strong and i wouldnt hesitate to use it unbacked

thanks for the reply.  I have heard it said that a v splice is as strong as solid wood if done right.

The color pattern on our Texas copperheads seem to match. That last one I got was 30 inches long... Long for a Texas copperhead. That one I hunted on the back roads. At about 2:30 AM I cam across it..

Ohhhh. It was hard to let go of it, but I'm glad I did 8)

As others have said...Nice save man.  No offense but I'm glad it split.  Just so I could see how you handled it.  Very impressed.  Good job.  Nice bow!
