Okay, so I had this crazy idea to try to create a bow using some obsidian with it. I had a couple of large slabs and had some thin slabs cut from it. I glued it to the maple and proceeded to tiller. I got it strung, but am not sure if it will hold up to full draw since I heard some cracking when I strung it. it does look cool thouigh

Obsidian as the rock or a wood?
Looks pretty sick.
-
That is wild....more pics please ;D
-
I feel like I'm missin sometrhin?!? ???
-
;D
-
Obsidian does get really flexible when cut thin enough. The cracking you heard is probably from the wood or even excess glue.
-
I have feeling it is a april fool.....? baleen?
If it is stone, that is amazing.
-
hehe...good one:-)
But you did make a butifull bow there...whatever you used for the back:-)
Cheers
-
Is that vulcanized obsidian? I heard that stuff works for backings. ;D
-
It looks like a backwards hornbow, :). Theres no way thats a rock, really? Thats insane! Looks very cool.
-
is that all you do is make bows all day... ;D ;D...it looks great...i hope it it holds up...john
-
??? ??? ???
-
yes parnell it is vulcanized obsidian, I have a rock guy that is really good at vulcanizing. his name is Spok. ;D :D
-
A Vulcan huh? OK, now i get it ;D. Not that i know anything about vulcanizing but seeing as how ya mentioned obsidian - I had to take a look. Not April fools for sure - more pic's?
-
I have some slabs I just cut what did you use to glue the obsidian on I would like to try this? I think the gold sheen would look sweet :-\
-
I'm so confused. ???
-
ryoon, I'm with you. In a state of confusion. :-\
-
Look at a calendar guys! ;)
-
I KNOW BETTER CAUSE I'VE SHOT THAT BOW,,,,,,,,,,,, :o :o Oops did I say that. It really is a cool bow but I've never seen obsidian that tough ;D ;D
-
Please wear safety glasses and a flack jacket!
-
...bet it's glass backed just not volcanic glass... ;D
-
its OK, after midnight things will be back to normal..... ;D >:D happy april fools day!
-
Think about it guys. If obsidian could back a bow, you would have to tear flakes off when you knapp points!!
Good One Junkie!!! ;D >:D

the bow is backed with baleen, I made it a few years ago and just dont shoot it much. I am reducing the weight to make it better but I may take off the baleen and put it on a yew stave. havent decided yet. I did have fun with this thread though ;D
-
Ok, you win second place for April Fools :p
-
Ok, so you killed a whale in the State of Confusion with an obsidian point with this bow? Is that what I'm hearing?
Seriously, nice looking back no matter what the material. I like shiny black.
-
Ok, you got me. Goes to show you how often I look at the calendar. Here's a question, what is baleen? ???
-
looks like you got em to fall for that one, you had me going to (nearly)... suprising how 'trusting' and gullible us humans can be eh....
-
our group is especially gullible because we are always looking for new things to make bows out of ;D Dave, baleen is what hangs down in a whales mouth to filter out the plankton when it is feeding. it is actually fine hairs that are in long strips, these strips harden when they dry out and have many uses among native alakans. they even use them for sled runners. Glenn St. Charles was the first modern person to use baleen, he found it in a hide dealers shop. they used it in making womens corsetts.....and thats the truth :P the stuff really stinks when you sand it, smells like shellfish, imagine that. it is very durable. I used epoxy to glue this on, but the next time I will use urac. by the way, what was the first place joke?? I must have missed it...or fell for it ;D
-
Interesting info :p
And first place went to a pothole, hidden by crunchy looking ice, so when i stepped to break the ice i sunk up to my knee :(
-
so its not obsidian :'(, its still awesome though, you defiantly had me fooled, i i were you though i would try makeing one as a joke and see how many people believe you now ;D
