Title: Red Oak Pyramid Flatbow
Post by: Caius on March 29, 2011, 04:17:05 pm
Since my Maple long bow dies :'( I've moved on to my other piece of wood, some lovely grained red oak. 64" long, aiming for 40# at 30", unless that's too long a draw...

Here a pic of what's been done so far, basically, glued on the riser. More pics when my phone stops being stupid.

You might want to concider some time of backing for that draw length / bow length combo. Especially as you are just starting. It would give you a better margin of error. JMHO.

I'm probably going to lay some silk on it. If I can find some for cheap enough.

Linen works good or brown paper bag, mabey a little easier to come by. I get my linen at Goodwill, table cloths and such just have to read the tag for 100% linen.

Yeah the board is 64" long. Was the only piece with straight grain.

And thats a good idea, I might have to go on a goodwill run.

At Goodwill... look at women's trousers.  Some are usually linen.

Ya make sure you read the actual tag of material used. "linen" is used to describe any bed sheeting. try googling "linen thread" and you will find alot of them are actually cotton thread for "linens"

I would make a wide paddle/mollegabet bow.  2.5-3" wide till mid limb and eiffel tower to 1/4" nocks.

I really like the lever tipped bows...very smooth

for a 30" draw I wouldnt make a bow less than 66" NtN with a glued on handle... especially if you are just starting out... I wish you all the best of luck on it but I would try to make one a little longer first and then come back to this one.   :)
