Title: tree id
Post by: ken75 on February 27, 2011, 12:32:29 pm
got this one in my yard and no clue what it is . looks like a type of plum but it has never had fruit , although it may be the absence of another tree like it . the flowers on it now are the first time it has gotten flowers in the last four years. maybe someone will know what it is

it does have some knarly thorns several inches long

Looks like a type of pear. There are ornimental flowering pears(Bradford and their cousins) that either don't bare fruit or insignificant fruit.  It could possibly be a wild plum too but I think it is at least a fruit tree.

Looks like a wild crabapple. If not, my next guess would be a pear seedling, as Pat said.

It appears to be in a yard so it could be an exotic tree from overseas purchased in a nursery, but my first impulse was a "Prickly Apple" variety.  The bark reminds me of an apple tree and the leaf is similar...just a guess.
