Title: Primitive Bow-fishing Reel?
Post by: Stonedog on February 22, 2011, 11:26:40 am
So....I really do not want to put a modern reel or spool on my ELB......

Has anyone every made a spool from natural/traditional materials?

I turned a spool down on my lathe out of redwood a few years ago. I still had to use one of the Great northern adapters to mount it. It works real well!

tie a pole to your belt, have the line go over your head.  then when you hit, you can reel it in like normal.. lol

I used to go primitive bow fishing when i lived in KS. We would shoot carp and gar in 3-4ft of water in a river and run /swim them down and grab the arrows to retrieve them.
 Lots of fun.

Here's a couple that I've turned.  They're both out of a hackberry that my parents had cut down.

I just lace them on with leather boot laces.

Hey Recurve, I sent you a pm, before, telling you about the 80lb pull magnet, that is plastic coated, for $ 8.00 at Harbor Freight.  If you have one near you go get one, and go get your tomahawk back!  ;)  being that it had a spike on it, I doubt the current has move it much.  the magnet is in the recreation section.   8)

It's not real primitive but I've made them from a chicken noodle soup can and mounted it with a piece of aluminum angle and tape.
