Title: Backing question
Post by: swimbill on January 18, 2011, 02:59:45 pm
I am building a r/d Ipe bow.  I need to back it.  I have 2 choices, which is better?  I have hickory but the grain is not good flat sawn, would probably need a linen back on top, or I have quartersawn white oak with very straight grain only 1-2 run offs.  opinions

I'd go with the hickory. Paired with ipe it will make a very good bow. Even with some grain problems hickory makes a good backing. Unless the backing has radical runoffs the hickory should be suficient with no other backing.
