What are the top 10 tools that a bowyer needs to have to start out besides wood? Also, where could one obtain these tools?
-
A good axe or hatchet, a rasp, a scraper, and a rat tail file.

DiGi, welcome to PA. Happenstance would have that there was a recent discussion of that very topic. You may find some of the posts of interest.

Flea markets, yard sales, and estate auctions can be excellent sources for all kinds of tools.

Want to
If you collect enough want to it will happen other wise it will all fade into nothing !!
Bows can and often are made with very few tools .
just a hatchet or pocketknife
sometimes only a piece of stone or glass
But you have to want to
After you collect enough want to!
The bigger question is what tools will it take to stop you from being a boyer

Well said, Buckeye!

Get a good bow building book or take a workshop with an experianced bowyer.

After catching up on youtube videos, I must say that some of the bushcraft guys are really doing a great job making survival and beginner bows. I'm convinced that you could get by with just a good quality machete and bending the bow over your knee (to check tiller). I'm going to start using one myself.
Otherwise, you can get by with a hatchet, a knife, a wood file, and lots of time. :)

hatchet, rasp, knife and a sharpening stone

One of the best tools I've run across are the people on this forum,....
the advice from helpful, down to earth and knowledgeable people,...!

I just got a scraper shave from lee valley tools and it is sweet, can't wait to tiller a bow this weekend with it.. I have had the dean torges bowyers edge and this is different (scraping angle) but much better functioning and beutifully made. check it out

Only tools I have and use
8" chefs knife I found in my parents basement.
14" gerber machete from dicks.
sureform rasp
4 way rasp
some scissors as scrapers
and some small files for nocks.
You dont even need a tool for nocks really...I've fallen in love with skinny tips and tie on nocks...tips are too narrow to file grooves

I use for bowmaking my bandsaw, rasp, drawknife, spokeshave, scraper and handplane.
