Title: Feather Burner

What are some of the favorite methods to shape fletches?

Any minuses to using a feather burner?

i just use a scissors once i have my feather tied onto the shaft

I have several size and shapes of choppers and a Young burnner. Have to use the burnner outside because of the smoke and smell. Like to be able to create my own shape. Cost is a factor. They are not cheep.

I made my Burner out of an Old Weller Soldering Iron...a board...stainless steel wire....and some nails....works just fine...and I can bend a new wire for a new shape...

I have an old Young feather burner and love it...way better than a chopper. It is smelly but I just go out on the front porch and let the breeze take the smell away.

Mike, 3Rivers sells burner ribbons for a couple of bucks each.

I just bought 3 of those ribbons from 3rivers.  I hope to build a burner soon.

The biggest drawback to the burner is definitely the smell. I have on occasion gotten the ribbon to close to the shaft and burned the shaft. Not a big deal but if you crest the back and burn the paint it isn't pretty.

Ted at Raptor Archery spent 5 minutes trying to talk me outa buying the Young's Feather Burner.  Finally I asked him if the customer's money was ever not green enough for him and he relented.  Best buy I ever made, three my feather choppers in the trash after the first dozen arrows. 

Yeah, it stinks to use.  So what, I rarely lack enough breeze outside to use the bloody thing.  I can do three dozen arrows in about three minutes, and every last one matches perfectly to the one before it and the one after it.

I use the one at my club.  :-)

Always a lot of hot air around that place.  So the smell is not an issue ::)

Honestly I tried a chopper and never did it right.  A like using a burner a lot more.  Matter of fact I have a dozen cane arrows I got for Christmas from David Knight I put some turkey feathers on and I plan to use the burner this weekend.

Just burned two dozen yesterday morning.  The trick is to get the breeze blowing in from the side.  If it is blowing into your face that is bad, but when it is at your back the smoke gets swirled up and hangs in your face without mercy!  *hack*hack*wheeeeeze*
