Title: chasing a ring on red oak

Hey guys has anyone here tried to chase a ring on red oak? I'm finding it very difficult. Any ideas?

Why? Take off the bark and make a bow. Best done with a scraper like tool or you'll have to eventually chase a ring. :) Jawge

Yeah but the problem is the bark was removed right after it was cut and wasn't sealed. So the back is checked badly

Sealing a whitewood is not a typical procedure. Perhaps it was left in a hot area? Anyway, sometimes those checks go pretty deep. They run with the grain and are usually not a problem. Look at the butt ed and see how thick the ring are. Try it. I'v ehad to chase rings on hickory because I cut through removing the bark. That's the way it goes. Jawge

ok thanks! I noticed that the heartwood would be pretty easy to chase a ring on. Will red oak handle an all heartwood bow?
