Title: BBI for a friend...Pic heavy.
Post by: Easternarcher on November 25, 2010, 08:36:17 am
Well, this is the first bow I've built this fall. Actually started it this spring for a friend.
Boo backed IPE....47lbs at 26in., 60in NTN. Riser is a bit different in that it is actually done with the "I" beam style. Really dark IPE center core and birds-eye maple outer checks. I wanted to showcase the birds-eye.....My friend's favourite wood. Tips were a reflection of the riser.Looks pretty cool.
The stain on the boo is brown-green-then black leatehr dye, buffed back to create the camo effect. Worked OK I think..
Two coats of shellac as sealer with 6 coats of TRU-Oil.
The tiller kicked my butt on this one. I think I got it tho.
Buddy seems to like it too. It shoots remarkably well, as most Ipe bows will.

Let me know what you think.
Additional pics in the next post.

Thanks

The upper limb is a bit too stiff in the outer third, but I needed to maintain draw weight, so there it is. ???
A couple of more shots and then the money shot!

Absolutely stunning bow! I love the contrasting colors and attention to detail, as well as the dye job on the bamboo.  Excellent all the way around. Congratulations

I'm a big fan of your stain job as well.  Beautiful riser and tip overlays.  Pretty nice looking tiller as well.  I'd like to get ahold of some Ipe to try out.

Good job!!

Beautiful bow but you don't appear to be hitting full draw, are you experiencing the wood bow apprehension most of us experience at times? I have a yew bow that is my favorite and I never hit full draw when I am shooting it, on the tiller tree no problem. Steve

Badger, that isn't me at the draw. It's my friend and he is not accustomed to trad bows....he shoots mostly compounds.
And his draw style just kills me to watch! I know he's not coming to his full draw, but he claims his shoulder is bothering him....I think he needs some pointers.

Wow, seeing bows like this make me realize that it is time to step my game up if I ever wanna make them of this caliber.  Beautiful work and tiller is perfect.  Got it bookmarked for November Backed BOM contest too.
