Title: Tennessee Classic Bamboo Backed Ipe Reflex Deflex Bow
Post by: El Destructo on September 13, 2010, 11:47:41 am
Well this is a Blank that David Knight gave Me at the Classic this Year for a Trade I made with Him...It's a bamboo Backed Ipe and forgive Me David....but I forgot what the Handle Woods were... :-[... The Bow is 66 " N-T-N....1 1/4" wide...Tapering to 1/4" Phenolic Tips.....I stained the Bow with Analine Leather Dyes...and went for a Fade Out Style on the Bamboo Back....I sealed it with Lacquer...this was the first Lacquer Job I have done...and I think the Last....not too keen on the Stuff.... :-\ The Bow Draws very Smooth...and hit with Authority at just a little over 200fps with a 500+ grain Cane Arrow...It came in at 58 pounds at 27 inches of Draw...I am very Happy with this Bow and the way it performs...I am hoping to take a Mulie with it this Year...if the Gods are willing........ ;D.

I had lots of Help and Encouragement on this Bow as I built most of it at the Classic during a Bow Build that David and Wade were giving... I would like to especially thank David for the Blank...and Shannon....Josh....Jesse for giving Me the Guts to keep filing on them Tips...I can not believe how Narrow I got them...and they still haven't broke..... :P...I also want to thank Pappy...Eddie.... Greg...Pat....and whoever else I am leaving out for all of the Help and Input into making this Bow...I think it turned out great...

Very impressive Michael!!! I have a hard time reducing tips for the same reason ypou did but know that reducing that extra physical weight can sure make a big difference.  Very nice bow!!!  8)

Josh...I was in shock too...I didn't expect but about 160-170 out of it with them heavy Tonkin Arrows...but I sure will settle for 200+.... ;D...but it wouldn't have mattered ....this Bow will hold some great Memories...no matter what...I had a bunch of Great Guys helping Me with this one...and I will always remember the time I had building it...

Great looking bow and 200+fps that is amazing.
What about the lacquer did you not like? I've used it some on arrows and it seemed fine, love how fast it dries.
I also agree, don't cover the handle!
Mark

Mark...I wasn't too impressed with the Spray On Lacquer...it gave an Orange peel effect that I didn't like...and after about two weeks of shooting...I noticed some small areas of Flaking...so I went back and sanded it all down again...and coated it with Lacquer from a Can...and it seems to be doing nicely now.

Beautiful bow!  Gorgeous slim tips too.  From the full draw pic's, it certainly looksike you're getting as much of the limbs working as possible!

Nice fireplace too :D

Thanks Hatch...Yeah...the Limbs are working all the way out...just doesnt look like it ...if you are not up on these Deflex/Reflex Jobbies... ;D I love the Fireplace too...the Wife Hates it though...every time I use it...She Vacuums it out...and pulls the Glass out and Bleaches the Soot and Creosote off of it...can't handle not having clean Glass..... ::)....Women.... ;D

ADB...thanks for the compliment...but the Speed probably goes to the Designer...I am sure that it has a lot to do with the Speed...but my Tillering couldn't have hurt though.... :P

hey i thought of a question,on the power lam does it stop at the fade or extend past the fade into the limb as it narrows. ive done a few r/d 's but i havent used a power lam . might try on the next one though. thanks ken
Title: Re: Tennessee Classic Bamboo Backed Ipe Reflex Deflex Bow
Post by: NTD on September 13, 2010, 10:22:17 pm
Ken,
It extends past the fades.  It helps keep the wood from bending too near the handle and risking a pop off of the handle.  In these blanks the ipe is only 3/8" at it's thickest so you really need something to keep the handle area stiff.  The powerlam gets it done.

Really nice work as usual.  ;D

OK ...enough already Guys....I thought I was doing Ya'll a favor....I thought that showing my Chicken Legs was Bad enough....didn't want to show the Gut again...and Another PA Member has already got the " Full Moon Shot" patented....... ;D

And Nate is right the Power lam does extend past the Fades....there really isn't much Limb Taper to this design....the Limbs are 1 1/4" wide until the last 14" of each Limb...and gradually taper down to the 1/4" Tips

Thank You all for the Compliments on this Bow...I am very proud of it also...It is not only the first Bow I have built that bests the 200fps record...It is also my first Laminated Bow that I have ever completed...that has stayed together for Me not only to Final Tiller...but I have probably already put 400-450 arrows through this Bow...and let me tell Ya...It is the most Accurate ...Shoot where You Point Bow that I have ever shot...it's Sweet! It shoots just about every Spined Arrow I have and hits where You point...it's not particular at all...I think I am going to be really Happy with this One...and Tim...I still got Your Address....but I wouldn't be expecting anything more than some Cane Shafts in the Mail .... ;)

Hammer....thanks but the Dye Job might blend in Back Home...and in Wisconsin...but herre if it aint Beige...Tan...or Black (after the Idiots throw out cigarettes and burn the countryside up).....it don't blend in to the Fall Colors here! Most of the Trees here either loose their Leave early due to the Heat and no Rain...or they just go from green to brown and fall off...reall crappy Fall Colors here!

The tips are nice, the bow is an obvious shooter, but my favorite part is the fade from black to brownish red. That's my favorite look for a bow of this design. Great job.

Very, nice bow, Mike. I thought you were going to crap when we stuck it on the sander, LOL. And then figured it would be 15# after you hand sanded it for 3 days. You nailed the tiller or it wouldn't be shooting that fast, Sweet!

Now that this thread has been bumped, just wanted to say I have admired this one for a while. Found it while looking up bamboo backed ipe bows on google and this one stands out. Looks excellent, and crazy fast with the chrono to prove it. This bow is my frame of reference for what to strive for in a reflex deflex bow.

Although I did click on the thread expecting to see a new bamboo backed ipe from the 2014 Tennessee Classic, this is still a great bow.

It is a beautiful bow but I highly doubt that the test results are valid. Even the modern carbon long bows with similar profiles will not approach those numbers. This particular bow has the tips resting about even with the back of the bow when unbraced. With a valid strict test using a 10 grain arrow my quess would be in the low 180's which is still excellent. I have tested many mant bows over a lot of years and I learned there aint no magic bows out there, modern or primitive.
