I wanted to give UK and other interested Bowyers a heads-up on a primitive archery event in the UK next year. I am posting this on behalf of Wally Robson who is organising the event. I am posting it here as I think it would escape the attention of many potential participants if posted within the events section, but can understand if a moderator moves it - but if possible please let it stay in the bows section for just a little while as this will be the first ever shoot organised in the Uk specifically for primitive arhcers!
OK, over to you Wally.........
"I'm a member of PAAS Primitive Archery and Atlatl Society. We have decided to hold a 2 day primitive event at the Magna Carta field archery club in Surrey UK next May 24.

Is there such a thing as a "sticky thread" to keep this up the top of the bows forum for a while? I'd really like to see the few UK/European Bowyers make a "mEUjam" if we can! The more who see this the more may come.
-
Yes, there is a "stickey". I wish I could go, sounds like fun.
-
Thanks Mullet.
We're a very small here in the UK at the moment but every time the few of us get together we all have a great time. All from all countries very welcome!

Sounds like a fantastic event ..... I'm putting it in my dairy as I type ..... see ya there
-
Mark, how far a drive is that from Dover??
-
Hi Frank,
According to Google maps, its about 95 miles / 152km from Dover by the shortest route. Approx 1 hour 40 mins drive. The nearest village is called Lyne, near Chertsey in Surrey.
-
Thanks for everyone's interest. This is going to be a great event and besides atlatl, firelighting, knapping, bowmaking etc. it will include the
1st Primitive Bow Championship in the UK
run by PAAS
(Prehistoric Archery and Atlatl Society).
I know it's a long way off but 12 places are already booked. If you are interested in attending on either or both days please send me send me an E mail wally_robson@yahoo.co.uk.
check out the flyer on start of this thread for list of events.

Hi Wally, definitely be there. Sounds like a great event I don't want to miss. Incidently, I was shooting at NALGO Open last Sunday with Geoff from Magna Carta and I believe you were on the target ahead of us with Carol Pearce/Edwards.
cheers

Well done Wally - and thanks for posting here Mark. I shall be checking my diary and blocking these dates a.s.a.p., we need another primitive meet in the UK. Stan
-
I could possibly make that meet. I live in the UK (Manchester) and make & shoot primitive archery equipment.
I am a GNAS Coach specializing in Fletchery (especialy medieval arrows) and I can share some techniques if you wish?

Hi
We are about at our maximum number so could any one who expressed an interest please confirm and fully book up, so I can see if others who are enquiring still can fit in, if you can't make it.
This is going to be a great gathering of primitive archers, knappers, atlatl, string, firemakers and so much more.
Don't miss out.
Anybody want to go on a cancellation waiting list please let me know
-
This is now fully booked and looks like a great gathering of primitives.
Reserve list is open, but unlikely unless you're quick ;)
-
Still interested in coming but it's to far in advance to know if I could make it, sorry...
-
Yay! Helene and I have our confirmation from Wally, so we'll be there. I just bagged a sackful of turkey feathers today and some hazel wands last weekend, so I've got some work to do before May...
-
Crikey, I just unloaded that sack of feathers. There are quite a few more than I imagined, so I got a good price in the end. :) I think I'll be bringing some of these along to the primitive weekend to trade or sell: there are primaries and secondaries, plus a few tails feathers, each from bronze and black free range turkeys. The guys in the States get these kind of things all the time, I got creative and contacted a few turkey farms before Christmas. All hand and dry plucked, and clean. I really do have a lot of work on ::)
-
Be good to catch up with you and your feathers-a bit of trading may go on.
I'm starting clearing some areas as there's going to be 33 archers tents.
-
Bob - I'm all envy about your turkey feathers! Would like to buy or trade some if you are willing to part with any of your stash.
Stan
-
Hi Stan, sure, when we catch up. I'll bring some along to the next cof60 shoot (Sunday 23rd Jan?)
-
Nice feather stash.
The free range turkey farm I used to get feathers from now dips the turkeys in wax so no feathers from there now. :>(
-
Yep, I was lucky and got my request in before Christmas, so the guy saved 15 birds and plucked them dry and by hand. Most turkeys over here are wet plucked by machine. After that the feathers arent much use for anything, although the guy at Surrey Turkeys said that the waste feathers are now being used for insulation products and stuff like that. When I went round to see him, he still had 6 birds left (2 broze cocks and 4 white hens), and offered them as a job lot, but my garden is too small.......
