Post by: ken75 on September 10, 2010, 11:08:19 pm
heres two i finished today both black walnut 66inch tip to tip , one is a mild reflex deflex the other is just a recurve, the r/d one has a bull snake skin that i split in half ,the recurve has oak snake skins. in the full draw pics is another straight longbow i built today without a finsh or hand wrap.these bows finished r/d 45 @ 28 , recurve 48 @ 28. sorry bout the fuzzy fulldraw on the r/d ill try and fix it tomorrow

Wow, nice work.

Got questions about black walnut...do you chase a growth ring?  Is that even possible with diffuse porous woods?

thanks bryan, thanks professor, JW you can chase the rings on black walnut ,or use the light sap wood as the back. i dont have black walnut locally( only one tree i know of in this county ,and i aint that brave) so these are board bows the r/d  and recurve are quarter sawn and the longbow is rift sawn .

Thanks, Ken.  I have a source for walnut boards, too...no trees that are fair game, unfortunately.  Any backing other than the snake skins on those quartersawn boards?

Ken, they look great. How does walnut compare to the Hickory that you've been using in terms of performance?

Good job.  Did you use dry or wet heat?  How well did it take it or did it take a couple of sessions?

I'd say your pretty darn good there Ken.  I like those recurves you've been turning out.  37 bows!!! Holy crap.  I thought I had built a lot at 18 in a year, not counting those that broke.  Keep em coming Ken.
