Title: juniper character bow- rawhide backed
Post by: elk country rp on September 10, 2010, 03:48:00 pm
i started this a few days after having surgery in july. i was whacked out on painkillers at the time, which is probably why i thought it would work. it has 3 holes through it (2 on top limb, 1 on bottom) & a bunch of knots. i did all the shaping with a firemans knife & a rasp, with a little (ok, a LOT) of scraping with a knife-turned-scraper. feels like it pulls around 40#-45# @ 26", which is as far as i've pulled so far. i need to work the limbs more before it try for a full draw. it's 63" ntn, limbs are 2 1/4" at widest, tapering to 3/4" at tips (so far- i plan to reduce those), limbs are ~3/4" thick at fades, tapering to ~1/2" at tips (again- i'll be working on those). i can feel just a slight bend in the handle as i get it close to full draw.
still alot to do on this one.....

cheers,
Rob

i put an ellipse on it to see just how uneven it is- i think that once i get the tips to do what i want it just might end up with a purty tiller!

I would say it's perfect right now. Gotta call it quits sometime with the tiller adjustments, or you could lose the purty tiller you already got! :)

2many- the funny part is- i don't have all that much time into it- maybe 10 hours total so far. i'd like to get an idea of the draw weight & look at the mass formula before i do much more. i suspect it'll have a bit too much mass at the tips as is. i'm stoked you think it's already purty!

anyone know what will happen when i cut holes in the rawhide to match the holes in the bow?

Rob

It definately qualifies as a character bow! Pretty tough to get perfect tiller with a bow so full of knots and character. Looks OK to me. I'd leave the rawhide one continuous backing.

Nothing...I have done it twice on Bows....one Osage....one ERC...and both of them I made it so you could see through the Knottholes....they were fine

And nice Bow Rob...work them Tips a bit more and then just shoot her in....I bet it makes a fine Bow.

What kind of glue do you use to glue it on with? Do you do it before staining or after?  That is an awesome looking bow! Maybe I should take some meds.....

thanks guys!

i used knox, sized it twice & wrapped with ace bandages for 24 hours, then unwrapped & let it sit for a week.

i can't resist- i'm cuttin the holes out!

lol- the wisdom of shaping a bow on meds has yet to be determined.....

;)  Rob

& zen, they're all over the place- but if you like, i'll go find one as convoluted as this one for ya!
