this is Australian Boulder Opal. My frined who lives in the county next to me has owned his mine in Australia for about 20 years, he goes there about 6 times a year for a month at a time to mine this awesome rock. This stuff is $$$$expensive$$$$  We did a trade. I didnt even ask for the high dollar stuff as I havent worked any of this before. Its a hematite type rock with opal seams in it, the layer of Boulder opal is about 40 ft down. It will stain your clothes and work area. He just sold 1 chunk of this rock for $60k. these first few pics of the bluish opal sell for around #100-200 per slab. This is some of what I got and what I have made so far

 I've tried some Jesse and spent a grand for some good opal, which knap's Excellant. If it's not sparkly, or shiney, it won't knap. I think Jeff will agree, all that brown and yellow Matrix is like mud when you grind it.

absolutely stunning!  It makes me wonder why people shoot themselves in the big cities over a little piece of crack cocaine or heroine.  Hell, if anyone deserves being murdered over anything, it's over stone like that!!!  AWESOME!!!

That's some awesome boulder, jc. The blue stuff in those first two pics is about
the best I've seen. Love that one little cab with the opal filled cavity!
Mighty nice living so close to the source for that!

that is simpliy gorgeous rock,and the cabs you make are incredible to look at
i like the one in the thid from last pic(i think thats the one) with the yellow in it

thanks, I spent at least 48 hours straight in my shop cutting this stuff and just playing with it. It took me about 3 weeks to go through it all. He is going back to his mine next week so I need to visit before he goes. most of this is the middle to low end stuff, now . All of these shapes are free form , np templates to draw your design, you just have to go where the color is, finding out that smaller is better with this stuff

Amazing rock and incredible work!!  A lot of the raw, broken rock looks lmost organic - like steak with streaks of sinew and fat running through it.

     Thanks a lot Jeff!  I just got my airconditioner and hot water heater fixed, and now I have to take a cold shower!
Those are fantastic !!  I would like to come over with Eddie, when he gets back from wherever he is at the moment.  I hope it isn't too soon, I have some things to do this month.  With my luck, he will come hopscotching back right when I am supposed to be out of town for other obligations, I have commited to.  The 8-12 I will be Jacksonville, for a Clown Convention, and Sept.  19th, I have to be at a celebration of life for my Cousin who passed away, a couple of weeks ago.  So no doubt he will be back on one of those dates, and be headed in your general direction.  You do some nice work.  I used to be a master model maker for jewelers a long time ago.  Got out of it, because it was not fun anymore when I had to meet a deadline.  Man, that is some beautiful rock!  I can only imagine what the " Good " stuff looks like.  Thanks for sharing those pictures.
