Well i got this one done, didn't take as long as i would have expected, sometimes things just work out i guess. It is the shortest stiff handled bow i've made, but i do only have a 25.5" draw.
45# @ 26", 58" NTN, about 1.75" midlimb. i wanted to start the profile taper a bit closer to mid limb but the knots on both limbs prevented that, i think it is kind of cool that the knots are in about the same spot on both limbs gives a cool look. The ironwood was cut down last summer at my buddies place during a "bow building weekend" some of you may remember Chad Holm from a few years ago when he still made all wood bows.
Sorry don't have a full draw pic yet.
I think is one o fthe better bows i've made from a challenging stand point and how it turned out. One unusual thing was these little marks through the bark and just touching the back of the bow, woodpecker or worms? they looked suspicious enough for me to wrap them with artificial sinew set in superglue. enjoy.

MMMM, good job on a difficult bow. I must admit that I'm not ready for such a challenge at this juncture but you definitely handled it well. :)
-
That is nicely done. HHB can be a challenge with a clean piece.
-
Very nice work! Love it. Jawge

Thanks guys, i'll try to get a full draw pic tonight. one thing that i like about it is the curly wood around the knots.

Here's the full draw, tiller isn't perfect but i was sure having a tough time getting it t bend into the knots. oh well it shoots smooth, thats the judge to me.

nice tiller

I like it, You did a great job on such a challenging piece of wood, very good looking bow.

Any of you work with whitewood that had woodpecker holes through the bark? I think that is what i had on this wood. The holes went throught the bark but didn't really go into the sapwood, just left a little discolored spot. I have some other staves from this same log with similar holes, i'll try to get a pic of them.
-
I think you done good on a tough and challenging stave.
-
Absolutely a good job. That does look like it was a tricky one. Way to go!

I really like HHB although i have noticed that unless you have a perfectly straight piece tearout when using cutting tools like spokeshaves can be a real problem. After the bandsaw i pretty much used only a farriers rasp on this bow until i made it to the scraper, and even that had problems with the swirly grain so i used a lot of sandpaper on this one for final tillering.

Tons of character! It proves that less than beautiful pieces of wood can make great weapons in the hands of a skilled craftsman. A very special bow. Congratulations.

I'm starting to appreciate a good "bow wood" (and i use that term loosly) stave more and more. when i started building bows i made a lot of board bows. Nothing wrong with that i still think it is the best way to learn the craft without a lot of investment and really work on tillering and technique. But in the long run i've had several board bows lift a splinter or just break even when i could see nothing wrong with it. Today, i had a board bow with a linen backing give out on me after well over a 1000 shots through it. I have yet to have a stave with a clean back break on me, even a character bow.
