Title: first character (not for BOM )
Post by: sailordad on July 21, 2010, 08:25:04 pm
well this is the first selfbow i have made that can qualify as a character bow
its got some snake to it
it had some whoopdie doos and a little twist here and there
but i took care of that with a  heat gun and form and a few wedges carfully placed
i probably could have taken out most of the snake, but i wanted to try a character bow
since i have several staves stored right now i thought leave it and go for it
when i started i wanted a 45# bow but it came in light thanks to the natural shape of that upper limb
when i started working it to floor tiller the bend in the limb caused me to create a slight hinge that i had to work out and lost a bit but live and learn
plus the wife needed a bow still  ;D so this one will be for her, unless she dont want it

its hhb, awesome wood to work with love it,glad i have several more staves of this most of which are much better than this one was
its 63.75" long,62.5" ntn,1.5" wide at the fades and up approx 75% of the limb, then tapers to approx .5" nocks, nearly center shot too  ;)
its pulling 32# @ 28" right now
i am thinking i might heat the belly before i finish it up and see if i cant pick up 3 or 4 more lbs.
it needs to be shot in yet,and finished but i dont think this one is gonna get stained just sealed with tung oil to bring out the beautiful wood
gotta say getting the tiller was tricky, seeing as to how like i said its my first character bow and all, could probably be better but i like how it shoots
and am just plain tired of working on it too, time to move onto the next one

heres some pics

well enough of my ramblings, thanks for peeking

thanks guys

it sure is a light weight wood, weight wise but lacks nothing on performance
this little sucker spits arrows pretty decent, only shot 6 so far but was impressed for the light draw weight
this is gonna make a real nice target/small game bow
heck its actually legal for large game here in mn
the wife should like it,if not i already do  ;D

i'll try and get some more pics tomorrow of the back and character, handle etc

just remember i aint one for beauty,i like a worker  ;)

i have a couple of staves of this that came out wide but kinda thin
the type most folks would have burned, but i kept them with paddle bows in mind
think im gonna try one of them next,so Mike be preparied to have your brain picked  ;D
thanks again

You got it Tim...if you need demensions and approx. thicknesses....let me know...they are a bit tricky to figure out tiller on the first time...with them Hourglass Shaped Limbs.... gotta like them shapely Curves....:P

Nice primitive style bow, love the ironwood also. Looks like it will be a nice shooter. Couple layers of sinew and that would be legal weight here in IN for whitetails, especially with one of your knapped points ;). Good work!

lookin' good tim, i'm working on an HHB character right now that has a knot hole through a limb, this is my first "hole in the limb" bow.

You thinkin' about coming up to Chad's for the bow building weekend? you live close enough you could even swing up for a day if you want. take it easy.

Nice job as others have said. HHB is powerful wood to build from. We have lots  of it in Penna. I have several staves 5 or 6 years old. I like it because it is a serious bow wood , like osage. It has a define character to it. Hard to split, but sweet to scrape. And the hue is beautiful. Reminds me of black cherry.I found most iron wood tends to twist and create character. I just heat and straighten if too bad. I learnt to build with junk staves, because others weren't available at the time. And most turned out okay. Now it is a pleasure to work with any, good or bad. It is only the opinion of the beholder. That is an awesome looking bow.

Does that HHB grow around here in MN?

I'm going to have to go looking for some.

I love the closeup pics, thanks for adding them.
