Title: Will this make a bow?
Post by: dwardo on June 13, 2010, 09:28:04 am
Ayup all,

I have been given a board and i have no idea if it will make a bow as i have never made a board bow before.
The grain does seem to run top to bottom its just the lie of the growth rings that i have no idea about.
I have some silk left over from my last bow so i could back it? Or i could wait until i want to try a laminate jobby....

Opinions please you lot as i am lost, give me a real stave and i have half a hope  ::)

PS its euro oak, no idea what sub as i was given it.

Not a good grain. Read about boards on my site. There is a picture of an almost perfect board there. For some reason I can't past the address. Jawge

It should work OK with a hickory, elm or hard maple backing!

as a selfbow,i wouldnt use it
as a backed bow like Pat suggested, perfect for that
i too would use a piece of hickory or elm or hard maple,or a reaaaaaaal thin piece of boo

Well it looks like its gonna be the spark i needed to get into lam bows. Like i had too much free time on my hands....  ;D

Now to find a source of boo in the UK or hickory or anything besides bleedin pine  ::)

You want a really thin piece of backing - 3mm or thereabouts.  Here is a detail photo of the handle a recent board bow I made made from a 30mm thick  board of Black Locust and a 6mm thick piece of hard maple.  You can see where the maple and locust are laminated together.  The thin maple back here is in two pieces, butted together in the center of the non-bending handle.

I gather the backing has to be prefect, as if i had chose a few growth rings with perfect grain on a proper stave?
Is this a store bought thing only? Is the bamboo the same? Sry for all the questions i just hadnt considered Lam stuff yet :)
