Title: Rhyolite revisited
Post by: FlintWalker on June 04, 2010, 10:40:47 pm
I pressure flaked my very first point from a thin flake of green rhyolite I picked up in the knapping pit at the Tn Classic. That first one was all Abo and I wore a blister big as a nickel on my index finger pushing on that stuff!
Every time I look at that first one, I think how nice it'd be to try another piece. Jesse to the rescue! ;D
He gave me a couple small flakes the other day, so I tried again.  This time...no blisters 8)  It's still tough rock, I just think my hands are tougher ;D

 This one's yours Jesse ;)

Awesome points! I picked up the same green material not knowing what it was other than tough. I can sympathize with the pressure flaking scars ;) What exactly is rhyolite?

Thank you all...especially you, Eddie ;D
For those that don't know. The first picture is the first one ever. The other is the last one (hopefully not ever though)

Bob, I have some onondaga that Russ sent me. Rhyolite is obsidian compared to that stuff!

Shanon that ryolite is special.  yea its tough but as far as ryolite go's its candy. I dug that with James about 10 years ago. and as far as i know ya cant get it anymore houses on it.

Absolutely fine work.  I can tell you that there just isn't a lot of that primo rhyolite around (not that I've been able to find anyway).  You have to make the best of it & you did just that, Shannon.

I have a bunch of it...well a few nice 5 # boulders anyway. Also some really nice black rhyolite as well.....
I will let it go for 100$ per arrow sized chip for those of you that just gotta try it out...   ;)  HA
BUT... I havnt made anything nearly that nice with it.

nice job shannon. That stuff is tougher than nails.

That's awesome, Shannon. That first one looks a bit familiar. ;) Gotta love some good rhyolite. Anybody can make a nice point out of heat-treated candy but you gotta work at it with that man-rock. Now you need a chunk of good speckled porphyritic rhyolite.  >:D

Ooooh, now that's a dandy! I think i can see a little improvement there ::). I got a chunk of that from James in the shop, need to hit it some more.

Eddie, the Cherokee didn't have that nice, easy-flakin' rhyolite, it's 200 miles east of the mountains and would have been in the territory of the Catawbas, Sara, Eno, Pee Dee, and other tribes. The NC Cherokee just had this local quartzite to knap, but the Overhill Cherokee in east TN had some Knox chert to play with. :)

Ditto to what Eddie said !!  Now pack your bags, the Abbey just called, and they're getting upset with you not being there yet, they had to drink all your beer, for today.  Oh, I told them that they could expect extra company also, since Billy, and Jesse will be going along with you.  So start packing !!
