Title: HBI R/D
Post by: NTD on May 15, 2010, 08:13:49 pm
Here is a Hickory Backed Ipe that I recently finished for a friend.  Handle riser is coyote and some kind of walnut.  It is 66" long 1 1/8th inch wide until the last 14 inches, then tapers to 3/8" nocks.  It draws 55lbs @ 30" although I'm only drawing it to 29"  It's my friend who has the monkey draw.  I think I got a lot closer to the correct r/d profile.  Let me know what you think.

Thanks guys.  El D.  Thanks for the PM.  I don't mind public scrutiny though.  Especially if others can learn from it.  As far as that top limb. I scraped and scraped and scraped to get it to bend better.  There are a few darker swirls of wood in that area and it didn't seem to want to bend.  It was hell just to get that outer limb open at all.  And center shot.... ;) Well doing it at all makes me nervous as hell ;D  Thanks so much though for the pointers, God knows I need em.  And I do like these bows too but mostly other people like them and that's what I do most of my building for ;D

hey Nate
Great work...I really like seeing the background in the pics. It reminds me that there is another PA member in AZ.

Thanks Ron, Pat B, Tim, David and Justin.

I really liked working with the hickory backing David.  But it definitely came out lighter after glue up than the bamboo does.  Didn't have much wiggle room :)
Also used Urac for the first time with this one.  I think I won't be going back to TBIII, the glue line on this thing is outstanding!!!

Thanks Scott.  Fastest bow I've made yet ;D  Course I don't have a chrony so no way to confirm that.  Draws sweet too.  Frank has a bum shoulder and said it's good on the shoulder.

Awesome bow Nate, tiller looks great to  me... I too am having trouble tillering the R/D profile.  I don't think mine is gonna look this good.  Great work man!   :)

That's way too nice! I've been pondering whether Ash would be able to stand up as a backing on a R/D Ipe, I suppose it's as close to Hickory as you can get so in this case it would lol.

Congratulations on a beautiful bow, now on to the next one :P

Heck yeah NTD, scrutiny is good. That is why I post bows, for that scrutiny. I am no master by any means so the input positive or negative is welcomed, in the hopes of one day mastering the craft. To my unseasoned eyes however; that appears to be a fine bow, and it sure looks sweet.

Thanks ScottD, Josh, Muina and Lombard.

Josh, It sure is tricky, this is my 5th r/d attempt.  I was happy with my BBO r/d but bamboo failure ended that one :'(  I'm just lucky that I get a lot of snakes skins to trade for this stuff, or else those mess ups would have gotten awful expensive ;D
