I think I told some of you that the next time I made a pine tree I would take a few pictures...so here they are.
I wasn't going to knap any tonight, but this little piece of Ky blue was calling to me ;D
The first picture is the preform. I try to get good convexity in the point and the edge dead on center.
The next picture, is after I notched it. I see no reason to serrate it first, since I might break it notching it. ;)
Next, I run one pass of flakes along the left side of each face from base to tip. Then, holding the point by the base, pointing away from me, I abrade away from the face I already flaked...in between the flake scars. This brings the edge back closer to center.
After that, I flake the right side of each face...from base to tip also.
Then all that's left to do is take a fine tipped flaker and exaggerate the points of the serrations. ;)

And here is the finished point.

Shannon,very nice as usual
when you abraid in between the flake scars do use a small diamond file so that you can avoid the serration tips while abraiding?
-
Yep!
-
Nice point Shannon!
-
Nice work Shannon. Kinda a build along.... Maybe u should put up on you tube...

I'm glad you showed some pics of the preform. You have got me wanting to try one now, so...maybe later on tonight, I'll give one a go.
(Don't be waiting on me to post a pic though) :-[

Good job Sir
Ron

Make it look as easy as baking a cake ;)I'll have to take a look in the bucket and see if I have anything worth a try. Thanks for the photos.Do you put a sharp point on your flaker or a blunt?
Bone pile
-
I like the brown spot! thats a nice one! i need to try a few.
-
thanks shannon. its pretty much what i have been doing except im setting up the second platform the same way i would get a notch ready. i just need to bring it back to center. great work bubba. peace
-
Glad ya'll like it, and hope the pictures help some of you.
Bonepile, for the serrating I hammer my flaker tip flat and use the edge. It's thinner than a dime, and I have to sharpen it a couple times just to do the serrations on one point.
Jamie, keeping the platform on center helps keep the flake scars the same depth on both sides and keeps it balanced.

Cool knappalong Thanks for sharing
Thanks Leroy
-
You and Jesse are gonna have to give me some lessons at Pappy's. That's another perfect point...
-
Sweeeeet.
-
Cool, I learned something from that. Your preform explains alot of what I have been doing wrong with my pine trees. Are you doing any percussion or is it mostly pressure..? MexiMike
-
The only percussion is just that of thinning the biface down. After that...it's all pressure. I spend as much time on the preform as I do the rest of the point. It's important to get the preform as straight and balanced as possible because once you run those last pressure passes, you got what you got. There is no going back and straightening things out. ;)
I'm glad to see that somebody gained a little from the pictures. ;D
-
Thanks for posting those pictures. I took a lot from them. What is the history on these heads? Where found, time frames, etc? They're big for arrowheads, anyone used them for hunting?
-
Parnell, The best I can gather they came fromthe archiac period and are found mostly in KY, TN and IN. They are associated with major waterways and were believed to be for fishing.
-
I made one today with no so good results. It was going to be real nice till I blew the ear of while notching. I punch notch . Maybe this is where I went wrong. How do I keep the ears on?
