I'd say! How come it's so clean? The rock I get is always covered with mud/dirt! ;D
-
yes it speckled rhyolite and its clean because its laying on the river bank full of rock
-
Looks like a nice haul, should keep you busy for a bit.

Thats a good load.
I went back to my KY blue spot today and walked all over and found a few more outcrops some good pieces here and there but not much. i went back to my original spot and loaded up. I'd say close to 400 pounds.
Sure was a good day to hunt rock. 68* here.

Nice haul, Bryan, good looking rhyolite. That's a lot of Savannah River points.
-
Good lookin haul! How does that speckled stuff work? All I've tried is a little chunk of the green.
-
Paul, the speckled (porphyritic) is grainer and harder to work than the green stuff. The specks are phenocrysts of feldspar, quartz, or pyrite in some varieties. It works pretty good with wood. You can make nice bigger points from it, but it's not as good for smaller stuff. Most of the Savannah River, Stanley, and Guilford points in central NC were made from the speckled stuff.

Brian,
That looks alot like our PA rhyolite.

Thanks Steve. Looks like I may get a chance to try some - I'll see what I can do with it..
