This bow started off as two failures.... I had made a highly reflexed bamboo backed ipe bow and got it to around 23 inches when it blew up at a knot that I uncovered while tillering. It kinda erked me but I just put it aside and started another bow knowing I would come back to that one and make another limb for it one day. Well the next bow I started was a hickory backed ipe bow and I had it drawing to a full 28 inches and was just kinda tweaking the tiller a little on it when the hickory backing I planed out failed. There was a wavy-ness to the grain in that area that I saw before glue-up but decided to press forward thinking it would be alright, boy was I wrong!
Well since I had two broken bows both with one good limb left I decided to put them together to make this Monstrosity. It is 62 inches NtN and pulls 51# @ 28 inches. The bottom limb holds around 1.5 inches of reflex while the top limb took around an inch of set. Kinda makes it look wavy if you look down the bow from limb to limb. I will include a photo of that. When you unstring it and lay it down with the back of the bow on the ground the tips touch the ground so I don't count it as having stringfollow. ;) The top limb is a little stiff towards the tips but I decided to leave well enough alone and call it done. Whaddaya think? Thanks for looking! :) :) -josh

Thanks for looking and for sharing your knowledge with me everyone... This is the best site and Magazine in the world for information on the wooden bow hands down! :) -josh

Looks awsome.
Tiller looks great also.
Nice job.
Tell
-
That's slick! Finish looks like glass and the tiller looks good too.
-
Nice Save Josh! How does it shoot?? Any different feel from either Limb??
-
Nice marriage! Those two were meant to be together!
Nice work and tiller, Josh!
-
that is on beautiful bambickery backed ipe bow
-
great fix,nice save, beautiful bow,like the handlle...hammertime
-
That is COOL!!!
-
I think it looks great, best of both worlds, two bows in one. ;D That tiller looks great, fine job on that bow.
-
thanks Riley!
thanks Sawfiler!
thanks El D, ...when I shoot it I really can't tell that one limb is backed in bamboo and the other is backed in hickory, it just shoots really nice. The added weight of the takedown sleeves probably is the reason... It shoots fast and shoots where I tell it to so I am very happy indeed! :)
Thanks bullit!! Both pieces of ipe came from the same 2x8 board, so really all I did was rearrange them and then put them back together but you are right, they are a match made in heaven! ;)
thanks aznboi! "bambickery" <<<<bamboo + hickory... hmm... can i steal this term you coined? ;D
thanks hammertime! I was kinda hesitant with the handle Idea, Thought it might be "too much"
thanks medicinewheel (frank)! You were the one who taught me how to do tip overlays! thanks for the buildalong!
thanks Scott D, it does shoot very great!
thanks gmc!
-
josh what a great bow. as long as the timing of the limbs is right it should be great. tiller looks really good. I think the name is too easy though! maybe dicot or binary or something or even duece. great bow no matter what!!
-
good salvage :D could call it jekyl & hyde.
-
That looks great Josh!
-
excellent , great save , you do good work !
-
Josh
That is one great save. I really like it. Congrats to you for pulling it off, job well done.
-
good on you brother... that looks like a real hunting bow to me.. good save..Hawk
-
Excellent story and a great save! Your takedown is bookmarked under February laminants for BOM.
-
I like how you rescue wood. Simply awesome.
-
It looks good racked an that's what is important.
-
Go on and use it...I think Bambickory sounds perfect for it.
I just hope one day I can make bows like that.
-
Bambickory ;D ;D 8) 8)....friggin awesome man...Looks great I like everything about it! Congrats on a great save.
-
Great job, remarkably even tiller...
Does Igor like it ;D
Del
-
Very cool, congradulations. I wish you had included the neck bolts, though :)
You may want to rename this the schitzo bow. lol.
Dane
-
Great job, very nice looking bows. :)

Great Save - after all of the work / time that goes into a build, you hate to scrap it. I don't think anyone could have salvaged the parts and have created a better end result. I'm in awe that you were able to get such a great tiller from two different limbs.
I just finished my first Ipe, and am having "sticky finish syndrome"!!! How'd you get yours so nice???
-
thanks everyone!
Sulfur, the timing on the limbs seems to be fine, the bow shoots great and the tiller hasn't changed yet after 100 or so shots so I guess it's good to go. I will admit I check the tiller often on this one in between shots I will snap a pic of the full draw and put them on my computer to compare and so far so good.
thanks juniper junkie! I think i am going with "bambickory frankenbow" with this one. :)
thanks Rich!
thanks Ken!
Thanks Rick!
thanks Hawkbow! Our deer season ends the 31st but I am gonna go next saturday hopefully and I am gonna take this one out for its first hunting trip, wish me luck!
thanks Oldbow! I am honored to compete this month! Lots of fine bows already posted though, really stiff competition...
thanks bowman26!
thanks aznboi! For the name and for the compliment! This is only my 9th or 10th surviving bow, glad you liked it!
Thanks NTD!
Thanks Del! Igor likes it! LOL
Thanks Dane! Couldn't figure out how to include the neck bolts into the finish work, although it woulda been cool!
Thanks pappy!
Thanks barebo! Alot of time DOES go into these bamboo/hickory backed bows, Sawing out the demensions on both pieces of wood, planing them flat to glue up, actually gluing them up, shaping them out, tip overlays, handle risers, then they blow up on the tillering tree, it is very disappointing and that is why I just couldn't bear to see either bow go to waste. I am glad I salvaged them to make a weapon of this caliber. The way it shoots, I wouldn't be surprised if this bow came out twice as good as either of it's counter-parts could have. ;)
thanks again everyone! :) :) -josh
-
Great job Josh. I like how you continued the 2 bow theme on the handle. Definitely a BOM candidate, thanks for sharing.
-
thanks Justin, I thought the two toned leather wrap might be too much but it is growing on me. :) -josh
-
Nice bow Josh. And a great thread. You gotta love takedowns!!!
Nat
-
yeah your Laburnum takedown was kinda an inspiration to mine. I staged a few of my photos like yours I just loved your bow so much. Thanks man! -josh :)
-
i thought it looked kinda funny until i saw the full draw pics, now i think it's beautiful! no such thing as an accident if you ask me ;)
-
thanks elk! I admit the bow does look kinda funny with the mismatched backing strips and mismatched handle risers, but danged if it doesn't shoot sweet as heck. :) -josh
-
great bow and it is really fast I should know... I've shot it!!! ;D Nice work buddy.
-
Thats cool 8). Tiller looks real good.
-
Thanks Erik and Jesse! :)
-
Here's a fine and challenging bow I missed! It will show up on February's Self BOM
-
Thanks Don!! I was wondering where it was at... ;) -josh
-

-
