I just finished an Osage bow that came out nice, and I thought it's worth sharing.
The guy I made it for has a 31" pull so I made the bow 69" ntn, draw weight was 55#@31" after shooting her some.
The bow has holmegaardish tips that are flipped up a bit which gives it a nice side profile and adds some speed.
Has a black-dyed rawhide backing, a handle of python leather and buffalo horn overlays.
I had some problems while tillering (see http://www.primitivearcher.com/smf/index.php/topic,15904.0.html ) due to being spliced from billets not matching too well but in the end tiller came out nice. I had purchased the spliced stave from an Hungarian supplier, wasn't to sure of the integrity of the back either, that's why I put on rawhide after first time shooting her.
Had a bit of set that I could get rid of using the heatgun, so the tips are right in front of the handle when unbraced.
Full draw to follow.
Thanks for looking.

sweet!11 i love the dye job, got a few more pics?

Thanks knap! - the weather is bad today, will try to get some nicer ones when the sun comes out a bit...
-
one more for now...
I'm happy with the braced profile of this bow, and on this pic you can see how slim the tips are!

Great looking bow I bet it shoots sweet.. ;)
-
WOW, many replies in a short time!
Yes, the bow does shoot sweet; fairly fast and still easy to control.
Thanks for all the nice comments!!
-
Outstanding!!! ;D
-
OMG! Those tips are awesome. I really really need to learn how to get some of mine looking like that. I was looking at the last holmegaard bow I built and thought that there may be some performance benefits in slightly reflexing the stiff tips. How's performance?
-
Thanks Dano and ryoon!
ryoon, I'm positive the flipped tips have added performance; the bow shoots with authority, and good speed, too, even though it's sort of long!
Maybe you want to check out my thread in the build-along section about tip overlays, too!
-
Ah man I love that and if you want to send it to the wrong address...PM me.
-
Wow!!!
-
That is a great looking bow, love the color.
-
Very cool looking bow. If you miss with all your arrows, I think you can kill something with that one very pointy tip!! ;D What did you make the grip from? It's obviously some sort of snake, but what?
-
Another very nice bow, Frank but I'm not surprised. 8) Those Holmy tips are cool too as is your tip treatment.
-
Looks like a sweat shooter ;)
A sweat shooter?
-
Ya it looks like a "sweet" shooter... ;)

A sweat shooter?
;D ;D ;D ...forgive the non-native speaker...!

Everybody thanks for the nice comments!
Just wish I had some sunbeams when I took the pictures to show off the nice tone in tone effects of the permanganate dye; form afar the bow looks almost solid black, though.
The snake skin I used for the handle most likely is Rock Python leather which was sort of difficult to mount, not stretchy at all, rips apart right away when you try to sew it. A well, good ol' superglue... ;D
Scott, adb, Pat: the bow shoots with no handshock at all, and I believe narrow tips are the path to travel to improve performance.
I like the tips pointy on the upper limb, bit shorter and bulky on the lover limb.
Thanks again!
-
Frank, that is up and down and side to side (I don't know what that means either, but it just sounded right so...) a gorgeous bow. Superb tips, great dye job, and fantastic profile. Great work. Get that full draw pic up; suspense is killing us!! :)
-
Nice lookin bow Medicinewheel. Great job all around.
-
Barrage, I believe it means 'all around', just like Okie says, except you are trying to be more ... specific......or detailed........... poetic, maybe......? well....
Thanks anyway, thanks Okie!
Everybody: I didn't post a bow in a while, and I must say it's really nice to get some nice comments on my work, again! - So, thank you all for that!
-
Very nice job. Hats off!
But, I'm annoyed about that I saw the pics first,
before bow in real.
I´ll come for a coffee and kneeling down!
SEHR SCHÖN!

Medicinewheel, I couldn't help but take another look at your photos this morning, and like before Wow!
What did you wrap around the bow I'm guessing eight to ten inches from the tips, it looks nice. I think
that kind of wrap would help me cover a lateral heat crack on the belly of an Ash bow I've made.
-
Very nice. I really like the tips .Lookin' forward to full draw. God Bless
-
Nice bow, Frank!! I bet that she really slings an arrow too with those narrow tips. Your finish work is out of this world! :) -josh
-
looks cool and unique 8). I wouldn't have guessed its osage.

Thanks lombard!
It is linnen wrapped in Tidebond2, dyed with permanganate, sealed with tb2 and waterproof boat laquer.
The crack you may want to first superglue dry, degreased rawhide (fleshside out!) to it, and then wrap tight as described above.
Hope that helps to save your bow!
Ps: the wrapping above and below the handle is done that same way.
-

Buggi, my friend, come by anytime for a coffee, and do as much kneeling down as you like! >:D >:D >:D
I like being your neighbour and being friends with you and your family, and thank you for many coffees!
-
Pete, Jesse, Josh, thanks for your kind replies!
PS: full draw pics where taken this afternoon and will come to me via email. Soon guys, soon...
-
Seeing your work always gives me incentive to try to make my bows a little better. Your tips on tip overlays helped me a lot .
I wish I lived around the corner so that you could show me firsthand how to turn out a great bow!!!
-
barebo, PA really is the right place to improve your bowyer's skills, all you need to do is watch, ask and be patient when you try!
-
Here are two pics of the fulldraw, well...something like 28"; the bow is tillered to 31"
On both pictures, the bow is sort of canted, sorry about that...

What a looker. That finish is georgous. If it shoots like it looks, it's got to be deadly!
-
i'll bet that one does pretty well in the performance department with the working limb at mid pont and the stiff low mass tips. nicely done.
-
like the others have said very sweet looking love the grip and tips.Hammertime
-
Thats a great looking bow,bet she is a shooter also, very nice.
-
Got your weapon bookmarked under December Self Bow of the Month. Very nice wor!
-
Dang Frank, that bow is a beauty! And I love those tips.
-
Thanks again crow, Kirk, hammer, Dave, OldBow, Gordon!
I'm glad you all like this bow, because it caused me some trouble to accomplish due to the ununiformity of the wood in both limbs, but it really came out nice.
As you can see I could not really do much about the lower limb being a bit stiff right out of the fade, when I tried the tiller began to flip; but the bow is long and certainly stores enough energy the way it is, and there was no balance problem at all.
She has a pull soft as butter and flings my regular arrows of 75#-spine, 29" as if they where tuned for her; I am truely impressed by the performance!
-
:o great work! love the tip overlays. and the handle. ;D
-
Thanks shooter!
-
glad to see the full draw pics, looks great! Finally get to see all the great aspects of this bow at once! Nice job on the tiller! :) -josh
-
A very fine looking bow, shooting is a pleasure I bet.
The flipped tips are just beautifull.
-
Looks real good Frank very nice work.
-
That tiller is wicked awesome! Jawge :)
-
Again guys, I'm really glad you like the bow so much; thanks again for all the nice comments!!!
-
Just finished a set of self-nocked target arrows to go with the bow...
-
man them are some nice arrows too! -josh
-
I've checked this one out a few times, waiting for full draw.
I've gotta say, man, that is about the most handsome looking bow I've seen, yet. And the arrows look just perfect for it. It's a stunner of a set! Supremely well done.
-
Wow that is a great looking bow Frank. Is your Osage from Europe or the states? Those arrows are great, I have just finished a set for my new bow, yours put mine to shame! I can learn a lot from your photos, love the self nocks, time I put more effort into my arrows.
Nat.
-
Thanks Nathan, Parnell, Josh!
Nathan the Osage is from Hungary.
-
How did I miss this great looking bow? I like everything about it, Frank.
-
Me too Eddie... Nice looking bow Frank. I like those long slender horn tips. Nice set of arrows also.
-
Thanks mullet and Justin!
-
Nice! Tell us about the arrows, please. Spine, length etc. Jawge
-
Thanks Jawge! - the arrows are northern pine, 32" total with a 70-75# spine, self-nocks are shaped to snap on to string.
-
Frank, I just got around to seeing your new bow. WOW! You always display beautiful work, but this may be the best one I've seen from you yet.
Do you mind explaining your dye process....and forgive me if I somehow missed that in this posting.
Thanks,
Dane
-
Aren] the arrows handplaned? I like pine too. That's some really nice stuff there. Ya done good. As we say here wicked awesome! :) Jawge
-
Jawge, thanks again! - No, not hand-planed, got them from a German supplier and they are really nice quality! - Actually the new owner shot FG before, and it was a great moment when he came walking over asking me to make an Osage bow for him; he was - like others in my club - impressed by the speed and punch of my bow. His wife ordered the arrows for him as a Xmas pressent.
Dane, thank you, too! - The dye is Permanganate (a lot of strokes) for a really nice brown all over the bow and waterbased woodstain on the rawhide backing, sealed with TB3 worked over with steelwool. Finish is linseedoil based hardwax, many layers.

As mentioned above, tillering caused me some trouble; here is the pic of the 31" pull on the tree that some of you stated needs more bending on lower limb right out of the fade.
Below is how the final tiller came out, the pull here is something like 28". - couldn't do more about it, or the tiller would have flipped, but I guess it did the trick...

Your tiller looks good to me.
-
The zenith of craftsmanship. Thank you for sharing.
-
Sorry for the late reply, I was away for the holidays...
Thankx xin and adb!
Have a Happy New Year!

Well, its been said by all the others but I have to add my 2 cents worth....absolutley wonderful bow. I must have missed this one when I was on hiatus.
