Title: A Texas point, from some Texas rock (Thanks Wade and David)
Post by: FlintWalker on November 21, 2009, 11:00:32 pm
I got a big 'ol box of rocks in the mail today, courtesy of n2everything and KnightD.
It looked tough and I figured I wouldn't be able to do much with it...WRONG!  Stuff works like butter. :o
I'm pretty sure Wade heat treated it.
Anyhow, I knocked out this point from it. I tried to make a Perdenalas.
  Thanks Guys ;)

You can do it Tim!  Everybody that knows the basics of knapping can do it.  You just have to visualize what it is you want and apply the steps it takes to get there.  The biggest reason I screw up points is by not slowing down and following the rules.
Never hit or push on an overhung platform. Either grind, pick or shear it off first.
Pay close attention to the centerline. The straighter you get the preform, the easier the finishing will be.
Never try to work a rock a bunch wider than you intend the point to be. That's just inviting hinges and steps.
 Thin the ends first.
Isolate platforms (especially when using percussion)
I like to use a pressure flaker with a little flex in the tip. And I don't like a sharp flaker either.
Ya just gotta take everything that ain't part of what you want away. ;D
 You can do it!
