Title: All percussion Turkey tail
Post by: FlintWalker on November 15, 2009, 10:21:54 pm
I picked up a big tator chip shaped piece of flint river this evening and went at it with my boppers.  I never did get all the bend out of it.  It had a big chunk of concrete that I just couldn't get through.  The rest of the point is pretty thin.  I figured since I wasn't gonna be able to make a nice slick point from it I'd try for an all percussion turkey tail.
I'll notch it later. But figured I'd post it before I touch it with a pressure flaker.
The more I knap, the harder it is for me to lay my bopper down.  But then, once I get that pressure flaker in my hand...I sometimes use it too much too. :-\

Nice looking piece.  Now a newbie question...when you say concrete is that a knappers code word or do you mean like the man made stuff "concrete"?

Shannon, great looking percussion work! If there is still any bend in that thing, it sure ins't very much.

Your skills are way beyond mine and you probably already know or have tried this, but thought I would mention it... A couple of times when I have had a good flake step in the middle of concrete, I have been able to put the flake back in place and then give the flake a direct whack and it will blow the step off. It only works if it is a good flake and the step still lines up real good. The difference is that the strike isn't a blow that would rip a flake off. Instead, I pinch the flake tight with my thumb and strike directly into the flake with a quick tap and it blows the step of concrete off. As I said, I am pretty sure you already know this, but maybe it will be a suggestion for someone else following the thread that is not familiar with this little tip.
