Title: Square bottle bottom
Post by: StevenT on September 09, 2009, 12:18:13 pm
I have a really good square rum bottle with a flat bottom. I would like to use as much of it as I can since the sides are flat. Has anyone tried to use the nail trick to pop the bottom out of a square bottle? Will it work the same as it does on a beer bottle or round bottle?

The nail trick doesn't always work with bottles.  Try it... if it doesn't work... try the sides ;D  When in doubt use a glass cutter then you can get all 5 parts to work on.  If that doesn't work... go get another bottle of rum and try it again ;)  Joe H

Thanks Joe. I was actually thinking about picking up a glass cutter on the way home. I was just wondering if any one had already tried. Hey, if I try it and it doesn't work, it's only an empty bottle.... and it would give me a good reason to pick another one up!  Steven T

All depends on who is looking at it. It looks darn good to me! I'll be real happy when my glass starts to look that good. :D

Thanks. I am going to the Knap-in in NC this weekend. It will be my first and I'm really looking forward to it. Besides breaking a few rocks I will finally get to learn what the heck tiller means. Yea.... I am not that young but when it comes to bow making, i'm even greener than what I know about knapping.

That's a cool looking point, Bob. I know a lot of knappers look down there nose at glass, but it looks good and is sharp. I love making them out of those ol'Clorox bottles.

I love the old Clorox bottles, my problem with them is that
I`ve only found 2 of them in a long time.  Any hints as to
where to look for them in the future?  Great looking point BTW
Bob. Looks like you`ve got good convexity side to side as
well as lengthwise. Do you abrade the egdes when you`re done
so that you can show them to friends without risk of cutting anyone
or leave them sharp & put them in a frame for future reference?

Lobo, I look for old clorox bottles in old dump that I remember about when I was a kid. Most farms in rural Penna. had a ravine running thru them somewhere on there Property. Everything ended up being thrown in to those ravines. I also found a few at flea markets. I usually abrade the sharp edge off an give 'em to people for Jewelry or make a few necklaces an try to sell them so I can buy more rock. One side of bottle points has natural convex, it,s the other side thats the problem, concave, so it,s seems like your always fighting that side to get some convex. Later Bob
