Title: Fire Hardening?

 Could someone please show/tell me the way to fire harden a spear or something of thAt nature?

you can push the end to be hardened into the ground just below a fire. turn it slowly. should come out looking light golden brown (white wood). for billets and such I have thrown them in the edge of a fire and let them burn a little. I have been thinking of using my gas grill, but haven't done it yet.

The way I see it, fire hardening is not an exact science.  Some wood will respond well and get harder but some wood will become brittle as well.  You've got to experiment.

Basically just hold the wood close to a heat source and "toast" it a little.

In any case, I think fire hardening is over rated. JMO
