Title: Hawthorn character arrows
Post by: broad_head on May 27, 2009, 06:26:50 am
I thought I would share with you a set of arrows I made for a bit of fun; they are made from hawthorn shoots. As you can see this wood does not grow straight or at lease not in the UK. They were cut from an area of coppice that had started to re-grow and created these young shoots. I managed to get a batch of arrow shafts from these; I lost or discarded a few during the straightening process as I tried to average out the wriggles from end to end. Fletching was all done by hand due to the irregularities. Despite the irregular shape of these arrows they fly surprisingly well but there are never going to be as accurate as a straight shaft.

I could see where they would fly quite well. I'll bet you would be fantastic with straight wood. Great attention to detail. Ronnie

Nice looking arrows, You did a phenomenal job. Patb had one a couple years ago at the CTA shoot that shot like a dart.

Peter,
Post a pic of those arrows along side your wiggly hawthorn bow!
I suggest that you shoot your wiggly arrows from now on. You're too accurate with the straight ones!

Freakin' awesome!  Just imagine the surprise among compound and carbon shooters when you walk up and start drilling the target with those snakey arrows. I bet hawthorn shafts are about as tough as they come too.
