I saw a pair of these Moccasins/Boots at last years Renaissance Festival here in Minnesota. I tried on a pair and the leather was so thick and soft and the price was so... Anyway... I started looking online for other makers of the same type of footwear and found a few, but all of them were still pretty pricey for my wallet. As I kept coming back to the sites I started to understand how they were put together and decided to start saving my pennies to buy some buffalo and elk leather so I could try to make them myself. The next few pictures are the results of my journey.
The main body of the Moc is Buffalo leather. The rust colored trim is elk and the dark chocolate deer leather you might recognize from the "Sexy Moc Prototype" thread. I did use a machine to sew them together but the leather was too thick for the motor so I turned the wheel by hand during the construction... The only reason I plugged it in was for the light. I used upholstery thread. To keep things in place, before and during sewing, I used a glue I found called **** Mender. It's pretty cheap, Non-Toxic, waterproof, permanent and sticks like grim death. There were a few times when I thought about not even sewing things together. And there were a couple of times when I wished I hadn't used it at all. The leather actually seperated instead of the glue joint. I used side cut deer antler for most of the buttons, the top two are crowns... I made the buttons myself also.
Not too bad for my first attempt at this type of Moc... I am contemplating a sole comprised of a type of rubber cement and conveyor belt shavings just painted on the bottom.
I made this pair for the Renaissance Festival. I should have enough leather left-over to make a pair of shorter ones, for bowhunting, with maybe only 4 buttons each.

Very nice work!!!
How long did they take you to do them???
Thanks for your time.
-

Good looking work, you are very talented.Ron
-
Very nice indeed. You did a great job. Thanks leroy
-
Thanks alot guys!!!
I started working on them last Friday morning and had the majority of both of them done by Saturday night... I had to do the buttons and the lace tabs yet... but I was interrupted with a Honey-do list... You know... Probably a total of 30-36 hours maybe. The hand-stitching with a machine took up a bit of time.
I did take pictures as I made them and I was thinking about doing a build-along....
Thanks again for all of the kind words and praise. ;D

Those are great! How was making the pattern for those? I've been thinking of making a pair in that type of style.

Barrage: The pattern was pretty simple to make. PM me and I'll point you in the right direction.

Sweet!

Hi,
If you just lose your job. You could always make and sell some of the mocs till a new job comes up.
Let us all know by PM and see who would be up for it????? Maybe.....

Thank You to ALL for all of the kind words...
I've done a bit more work to them since I posted these pics. I've added some dark brown piping to the unfinished looking top edge. I will post updated pics in the next couple of days and I am still working on a Build-Along thread to post.
and... I am making my wife a pair of the Sexy Mocs out of the Rust colored Elk leather... I am almost done with them...
and... I'm prepping some turkey wing bones, from my son's first turkey, for a couple of calls... One for me... One for him... Don't tell him though, it's supposed to be a surprise ;)
I figure I might as well make the most of my time off while I'm Laid-Off ::)
Oh... I almost forgot... there's also a half done board bow sitting on my tiller tree just waiting patiently for me... Whew

Just read through your build-a-long. Well done, I was able to follow without difficulty. I think I might have to try a pair or two after hunting season.
-
Those are fantastic! ...the nicest homemade mocs that I've ever seen, in fact. Thanks so much for posting that tutorial. ;D
-
I def. want a pair:) My question is what is the traction like; I love mocs of all kinds but I have never felt the bottoms were very good for traction, seem slippery, esp. in some kinds of conditions-what do you thinK?
-
I'll let you know how the traction is after this coming weekend... I'll be walking around all weekend at our Renaissance Festival in these and a second pair I just finished this past weekend.
-
I ended up making two pairs of these... My first pair, pictured here, out of Buffalo and the second pair out of Elk.
The Buffalo worked GREAT!!! no trouble with traction or stretching, even in damp grass, mud, rain...
The Elk, on the other hand, stretched out a bit just walking in the fresh, dew covered grass. They didn't stretch out
to where they were un-wearable... but they did stretch.
If you have a choice between Buffalo and Elk... Choose Buffalo.
-
Talonzz, that is why, buffalo hides were so popular, they were used in Europe, during the industrial revolution.
They were far superior to cow leather. All the factories, used them for the drive belts for their machinery.

I want one:) Fabulous looking mocs:)
-
they look good i own a pair that i traded for when i worked this year here they are. they are made from split elk hide with a vibrum over leather sole since i do blacksmithing and some hot slag wont burn through so fast when i step on it hehe

my friend makes these for a living just remember that the elk will stretch close to a 1/4 - 1/2 inch they used it on purpose so the leather can form to any size foot properly since all feet are different
-
what did you use for the stitching?
-
Nashoba, I used an Upholstery thread... Very Strong stuff.
-
Just in case anybody has been trying to download the build-along for these but couldn't because the link was Toast...
It's working again now... I didn't realize that it was down... ::)
