what are your thoughts?

never done that yet,but i would use acetone
only cause i just bought a gallon of new stuff ;D

I have only used Acetone or Red Devil Lye....both seem to work just fine....and one even darkens the wood nicely for you too!!

I have used acetone and denatured alcohol. Some folks say a good sanding and brushing off the dust is enough. I haven't tried that yet.
Depending on what backing you are using and what glue. For sinew or rawhide, lye(wood ash & water) or Dawn dish soap work well. I like a wet cleaner for these so the wood is slightly hydrated and will accept the hide glue better.
