Title: Juniper Self Bow
Post by: Keenan on March 31, 2009, 12:20:39 am
This is a Juniper self bow, She is 67" tip to tip and 63 lbs at 28"  This was from a dead standing sapling, that Dave C. and I cut several weeks ago. I have not triied Juniper unbacked, nor from a dead sapling so I decided to break a few rules. The back looked so nice with the cambium marking that I decided to give it a try as a self bow ,even though it has 26 pin knots.
The tips are elk antler and the handle wrap has a small bird point that I made a few days ago. I was surprisingly pleased with the performance on this one. Other bows that I've made from juniper have been sluggish at this length of bow, but this one is fairly quick and is a sweet shooter.  Enjoy

Very nice Keenan. The unbraced profile shows your skill.  ;) Full draw is quite nice too but something just isn't right with the pic of you holding the braced bow! ::)   The lithic accent it quite cool too! 8)

Thank you Jack. Getting to like juniper all the more ;)

Thank you Pat. I took some pain pill right befor the full draw ::). Drawing dosen't bother me but the bracing realy dose. Surgery is in the morning so I'm down for a while after this.

Thats an amazing juniper bow. :o I love the finish. I've made a couple of self juniper bows but all of them have eventually developed tension cracks. I think it might be in part to the dry weather here also maybe a difference in species.

:o Dang Keenan that is awesome! Good thing you decided to break a rule or two ;). The grain on the back of your bow looks strong in tension in comparison to other Junipers I have seen. It's a beautiful piece of wood, and you made it even more so..

I hope all goes well, and will be thinking about you till we hear from  Lulyn.

Timo, Thank you.  The surgery went well. It was a little over three hrs and they removed 4 more pieces of ruptured disk fragments that were sitting right over the nerve. They were also able to shave down the other two disk that were bulging. I can now walk without severe pain and the constant pain in the leg and hip is gone ;D. Definitely sore from all the carving but getting better everyday.

Hawk, Thank you Brother!. The shirt I love and I appreciate your help and ideas. Lulyn is startting to worry that I will ware it 24/7  ::) ;D

John, Thank you Brother.  I think you give me to much credit though. There are so many top notch bowyers on this site that it is an honor even to be considered amongst them.

Cowboy;Thank you. The bird point is some new rock that I found at a garage sale. I think it's a type of agate ???  I think I will be trying more standing dead juniper as well.

Glad to hear your surgery went well, I've been there, 2 back surgeries and a total hip replacement. sure is nice when you get rid of that daily pain.
That wood is gorgeous, as is the whole bow. The leather grip is unique.
good luck with your recovery, take care of yourself.

Jimmy. Thank you.  Seems that I haven't finished very many bows this last few years due to the health stuff. But I have about half a dozen that are half finished ::)

I cannot think of something to say about your bow that hasn't already been said! Just a couple of questions: how big was the sapling? Is your bow mainly sapwood?
Title: Re: Juniper Self Bow
